The Position

  • Join our News Desk as an Associate Editor

  • Assist in coordinating a team of 30+ contributors
    • Edit multiple articles simultaneously
    • Make decisions under pressure and meet tight deadlines
    • Lead and delegate to interns, assistant editors, and seasoned journalists
    • Provide writers with constructive feedback and actionable ways to improve writing
  • Revise article submissions to meet The Whim’s style and voice
    • Assign and line-edit breaking news stories and in-depth investigative reports
    • Present complex subjects in an accessible manner
    • Refine writing to be cogent and clear
    • Ensure articles rely on primary sources and verifiable information
    • Ensure each side of an issue is represented fairly and objectively
    • Ensure articles structure information in a way that allows readers to reach their own conclusions -- free from editorial bias or personal commentary
  • Shift seamlessly between issues relating to public policy, law, technology, and culture
  • Pitch and contribute articles on occasion
    • Investigate news leads/tips
    • Interview sources and build relationships for future articles
  • Monitor current events, policy decisions, and legislative developments
  • Coordinate content strategy with the Editor-in-Chief


  • Can manage a high volume of content in a fast-paced environment while meeting rigorous editorial standards
  • Fact checking and critical thought
  • Exceptional interpersonal communicator with the ability to work well in a diverse group of people
  • Knowledge of AP style guide
  • Can take initiative, act decisively, and receive constructive feedback with both grace and resolve
  • Familiarity with Wordpress, HTML, CSS, data visualization tools, and basic video editing experience are highly desirable
  • Sense of humor


  • Bachelors or Masters degree in journalism, business, political science, economics, international affairs, communication, or a related field
  • At least one year of professional editing or writing experience with a news publication or media company
  • Insatiable interest in politics and current events
  • Edit 60 - 70 news articles per week
  • Uncompromising ethics
