News & Politics Writer
Salon Media Group (publisher of Salon.com) is seeking a news and politics writer for a short term (3 month) contractor role through the election season to the end of the year. This position is open to candidates in the San Francisco, New York or Washington D.C. metropolitan areas.
We are a fast-paced, high-volume editorial environment and we want a talented journalist who can match our pace.
We are seeking a highly-organized, deadline and detail-oriented professional with a talent for writing and an eye for intriguing stories and angles of news who is proactive, efficient and proficient.
In this role, you will report to the managing editor and work closely with our San Francisco cover editor, as well as the rest of the editorial team. The writer will write and curate news and politics stories covering congressional races across the country as well as day to day political stories as it relates to the three branches of government while being faithful to Salon’s voice and brand.
The ideal candidate will have experience writing in a digital news environment with preference given to candidates with daily news writing experience and has shown the ability to ideate and write multiple stories each day.
In addition to being well versed in the political landscape, the ideal candidate will have experience in the digital publishing space, working in a CMS (familiarity with WordPress is preferred) and some experience with social media (Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Quora and Hootsuite).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Excellent communication, diplomacy, and decision-making skills with the ability to think creatively.
- Ability to write clean copy and needs minimal copy editing
- Strong entrepreneurial, organizational and time management skills.
- Most PC based applications (Microsoft Office Suite)
- Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere Pro)
