American Chemical Society has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, high-performing leader to join the communications team. This dynamic team manages the organization's brand and supports its strategic goals by producing written and multimedia products for internal and external audiences. We are looking for a thought leader who is comfortable with strategic conversations at the executive level to collaborate with stakeholders across the organization on the development and execution of strategic initiatives and audience engagement strategies. This is a managerial position and will supervise a team. We value clear communication, decisiveness and excellent organizational and people skills. The role comes with a competitive base salary and bonus potential.
Here's what you'll be doing:
You will provide thought leadership and strategic thinking in areas such as internal communications and crisis communicationsYou will build and maintain effective relationships with leadership across the enterprise to support understanding of and alignment with organizational strategy and prioritiesYou will oversee multiple strategic initiatives from ideation to implementation, setting goals, monitoring progress and driving projects to conclusionYou will act as a trusted advisor to the Communications Director and senior leadership team, handling sensitive information and providing honest and thoughtful guidance and advice on communications, people and prioritiesYou will identify pain points and recommend improvements based on data-driven decision-makingYou will have experience with change management and effectively managing teams through transitionYou will plan and lead meetings, staff trainings and workshopsYou will be comfortable accepting feedback and iterating to deliver the desired productYou will provide direction to a work team according to established policies and management guidance. If supervising direct reports, you will be responsible for people management actions including hiring, performance management, coaching and development.Desired Skills and Experience:
10+ years of experience working on high-performing communications or marketing teams7+ years as a manager of peopleExperience working in a busy environment, demonstrating the ability to effectively prioritize and meet deadlinesA self-starter with the ability to work well within a team to achieve organizational goalsExperience with navigating privacy and compliance conversations with organizational and technical stakeholdersExcellent verbal and written communication skillsStrong decision-making and problem-solving skillsFamiliarity and knowledge of the media and comms ecosystemsPrevious work for a scientific non-profit organization or educational institution is a plusA background in chemistry or a related field is a plus

Position Summary
This position will be primarily based in the Washington D.C. office. ACS employees work a hybrid work schedule, consisting of working onsite, three days per week. ACS employees are in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday with the third in-office day scheduled in consultation with the manager. While always welcome to work in the office, employees may work the other two days of the week from a location of their choice. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
