Job Description:
The Houston Chronicle is seeking an experienced education editor to lead a team of reporters producing top-notch breaking news and accountability reporting on K-12 and higher education in the Houston region. This role involves assigning, editing, and promoting stories from a five-person education team, ensuring audience engagement and coverage quality.
You will oversee day-to-day reporting on key issues such as the controversial state takeover of Houston ISD and coverage of local colleges and universities including Rice University, University of Houston, Texas A&M University, and Houston Community College.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead coverage of K-12 and higher education news, focusing on breaking news and in-depth enterprise stories.
- Edit various story formats, including quick-hits, explainers, live blogs, data tools, and long-form stories.
- Develop and support beat reporters, fostering diverse sources and insightful public records access.
- Manage team members through evaluations, feedback, and support to maintain a motivated newsroom environment.
- Analyze metrics to improve coverage and audience engagement.
- Coordinate with other newsroom teams to produce comprehensive content on public safety, government, and related topics.
- Collaborate with visuals, data, and audience teams to enhance storytelling and promote stories via newsletters and social media platforms (Facebook, TikTok, X, Instagram, etc.).
Qualifications:
- 10+ years of editing or senior reporting experience, preferably with a background in education or local government reporting. Knowledge of Houston education issues is a plus.
- Strong news judgment and understanding of education’s link to equity, politics, and economic mobility.
- Fluency in digital-first publishing, data, search trends, and social media strategies.
- Skilled line editor capable of sharpening leads and elevating storytelling.
- Commitment to inclusive journalism reflecting Houston’s diversity.
- Excellent organizational and planning skills for managing multiple projects.
- Collaborative communicator with a history of fostering newsroom relationships and supporting journalist development.

- Consistent, competitive daily news coverage.
- KPIs including total visits, subscriber visits, and conversions.
- Community impact and innovation in coverage.
