Grover Norquist: Tea Party Woman ‘Sad’ For Suggesting He’s Secretly Muslim

Back in May a tea party woman in Texas was seen in an online video saying that Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist is “showing signs of converting to Islam.”

Norquist feels sorry for her.

“It’s sad,” he told FishbowlDC at the Road to Majority Conference, hosted Thursday by the conservative Faith and Freedom Coalition in Washington. “Look, people shouldn’t embarrass themselves the way that she did. That was unfortunate. We just let her slide back into… something.”

The woman who made the allegation is Cathie Adams, president of the Texas Eagle Forum and former chairman of the Republican Party of Texas. “Many of us know him because often times we like what he says about economic issues, but Grover Norquist is trouble with a capital T,” Adams was heard saying in the video. “As you see he has a beard, and he’s showing signs of converting to Islam himself.”

Adams continued, “He’s married to a Muslim woman, but he denies that he has converted himself. He denies that.”

Norquist, who is indeed married to a Muslim woman named Samah Alrayyes, told us he’s had a beard since… he was about 18.

“When [Adams] said it, everybody on Twitter was laughing at her,” Norquist said. “You know, I don’t want to pile on. She had a bad day.”
