PBS NewsHour Hires New Reporter-Producer

PBS NewsHour has hired Katelyn Polantz to be a brand new reporter-producer. She starts on April 9. Polantz comes to the program from the Roanoke Times where she was purportedly known for her “scoops.” Among other things, she interned at Bloomberg and completed a fellowship at Poynter.

I’m pleased to announce that Katelyn Polantz will be joining the politics team as a reporter-producer starting April 9.

Katelyn joins the NewsHour from the Roanoke Times, where she’s been
reporting since 2009. A Johnstown, Pa. native, Katelyn interned at
KDKA-TV in college and at Bloomberg News after graduation. She was
editor in chief of her college newspaper, the Pitt News. She worked
with Final Cut during a fellowship at Poynter.

She’s earned a reputation in Roanoke for her scoops — a story about
under-the-table raises for a school superintendent prompted him to
step down three weeks later — as well as for her innovation — she
was the first reporter at the paper to live tweet events, and found her
sources for a story on Hurricane Irene using social media.

Katelyn also oversaw a training camp for high school students
producing a weekly publication for teenagers.

During the interview process, we were impressed with Katelyn’s
confidence, thoughtful suggestions for the NewsHour’s coverage on and
off the air, and with her passion for politics. That also came across
when we talked with her references, who said that she’s been
determined to move to Washington to cover politics for years. “She’s
an idea factory,” one told me. “She works at something until she
becomes the best,” another said.

We’re thrilled to have her on our team during this exciting election year.

Please join me in welcoming Katelyn (@kpolantz) to the NewsHour
family. She’ll be by next Thursday for a visit to the studio.

Best, Christina
