Mikki Taylor on Her 30 Years at Essence

When Mikki Taylor first started working for Essence in the early 80s, there weren’t nearly as many images of black women in the media as there are today. In our Media Beat interview, the fashion and beauty maven credited longtime EIC Susan Taylor for instilling staffers with a sense of purpose early on.

“I just remember her saying to me, ‘We come to this magazine to contribute,’ and it was something that she instilled in me that day that I walk with to this day,” Taylor recalled. “In fact, when I got the job, I was ready to go on a mission. It became more than a job from the moment I walked in the doors and began serving black women.”

Watch the full video to find out which Essence covers Taylor found most difficult to direct and what she has to say to the magazine’s critics.

Part 2: Tuesday, Mikki discusses her new book Commander in Chic.
Part 3: Wednesday, Taylor discusses leaving Essence behind to launch her own beauty and style consultancy.

If you’re a subscriber to Esquire and GQ like us, your upcoming March issues are going to look a lot alike. No, we don’t mean all the expensive stuff that you want but can’t afford. Both Esquire and GQ have articles about the crazy Zanesville, Ohio, exotic animal massacre in their next issues. Esquire’s is written by Chris Jones, GQ’s by Chris Heath.

Normally we’d be opposed to this, but the subject matter is worthy of the treatment. Now instead of one take on it, you can get two. Feel free to compare and contrast them because they’re both online now, prior to the print editions. Then let us know which one you enjoyed more.

Just don’t post a link to Tsovet’s race car watch. We wanted it badly — and were quite prepared to sell our bodies [Editor's note: Okay, maybe just my body] on the street for one — but they’ve already sold out. Maybe it was for the best, but the pain is still very real.

What’s your biggest weakness?

This is an interview classic, but although you know it’s coming, it’s never easy to craft the perfect answer. So we spoke to job and career experts to break down interview questions we’ve all come to know and dread — and got great advice on how you can tackle each one.

“Don’t try to use a cliché like your weakness is that you’re a workaholic. No one will believe that answer,” says Melanie Benwell, managing director of Canadian recruitment firm PathWorks Personnel. Instead, author and president of Penguin HR Consulting Ronald Katz says just be honest. ”Honestly tell the interviewer what it is that you don’t do best. No one can do everything perfectly.”

WCBS Rides the Giants’ Road to Glory to Impressive Post-Super Bowl Numbers

With the anchor team of Otis Livingston and Chris Wragge positioned on the Lucas Oil Stadium field, WCBS/Channel 2 concluded its special week of Super Bowl coverage with an extended post-game show.

Making the station’s Big Blue bonanza even more impressive was that WCBS isn’t even the home to the NFL’s NFC. That honor belongs to WNYW/Channel 5. In addition, Channel 2 didn’t televise the Super Bowl last night, as that privilege went to WNBC/Channel 4.

However, WCBS did manage to sway enough viewers at 11 p.m. last night, only losing in the time slot to WNBC, according to Nielsen overnight figures.

WCBS scored a 6.1 rating and an 11 share of the audience at 11 p.m. WNYW, which sequed from its 10 p.m. newscast into Giants post-game and Sports Extra, paled in comparison. The Fox O & O notched just a 2.5 and 4 immediately after the game. By 11 p.m. with Duke Castiglione reporting from Indianapolis, the numbers dropped to a 1.9 and 3.

The goal of the deal was to add additional technology media brands to QuinStreet’s online portfolio, expand the company’s reach into mobile marketing, and further develop relationships within the B2B technology space in addition to adding a roster of writers from the sites purchased.

“Ziff Davis Enterprise has a rich history in the B2B technology media and marketing space and is synonymous with quality and client service. This acquisition expands QuinStreet’s ability to service our B2B technology clients at scale, with high-quality, targeted, measurable marketing results,” said Doug Valenti, QuinStreet CEO.

Of note, in 2009, QuinStreet purchased Internet.com from mediabistro.com’s parent company WebMediaBrands.

Merlin Media Tries to Work Magic in Finding a New Programming VP at WEMP

The wheels of the Merlin Media’s experimental All-News FM format are still coming off. As we reported over the weekend, WEMP 101.9 VP of programming Liz Aiello was fired Thursday, after just eight months with the company–six with the station firing on all cyclinders.

Updating the story today, FishbowlNY has learned that Merlin has handed the reins to veteran broadcasting exec Al Gardner, recently hired by Randy Michaels to helm a Philadelphia version of WEMP.

Sources also tell FishbowlNY that Merlin is conducting a nationwide for Aiello’s successor.

The ratings for WEMP have been abysmal, .5 in the most recent book, down .1 from the previous month.

There has been upheaval at Merlin Media in recent weeks, if not since first taking the air from Emmis’ WRXP in August.

Walter Sabo was ousted from his position as company COO before year’s end.

Sarah Palin and Newsweek Are Perfect for Each Other

Last month, Sarah Palin blasted Newsweek for publishing the article, “Why Are Obama’s Critics So Dumb?” by Andrew Sullivan. She called Sullivan a “kook” and obviously missed the point of the piece. Fine. This is what she does — laments the “lame stream media” without ever understanding what she’s talking about. But today Palin has an article in Newsweek, about raising her son Trig. What changed? Nothing, really.

Palin, who was finally fading from the headlines, had a chance to put herself back in them with an article that someone else most likely wrote for her. One would think that if she was so angry at Newsweek she wouldn’t give the magazine the satisfaction, but that’s not the way she operates. Palin has shown for years now that she will do anything to remain in the press, so why not?

For Newsweek this was a no brainer (pun fully intended). The magazine under Tina Brown has been all about attention-grabbing items, and getting Palin to pen an article for the very magazine she recently attacked is par for the course.

Former WNYW Sports Reporter Andy Adler Leaves KNBC

Andy Adler, was a popular sports reporter/anchor on WNYW/Channel 5 for three years, before returning home to the West Coast in 2010.

But after less than two years, Adler decided she missed her passion–sports. Adler, today, co-anchored her final weekend morning broadcast at KNBC in Los Angeles. She also was a general assignment reporter at the station.

Adler tells FishbowlNY exclusively that she is excited to resume her sportscasting career, at an undisclosed location March 1.

“I miss my sports. I miss it,” Adler admits. ”This is my passion. This is what I do when I’m not working.”

Adler missed it even more when she was called on for occasional sports reporting at KNBC.

“Every time I did it, I just left like this is home,” Adler admits. “It was just time to do it permanently.”

Liz Aiello Ousted as WEMP Programming VP

To say the ratings for WEMP/FM News 101.9 have been in the tank since hitting the air in August would be kind. In the latest Arbitron numbers, the Merlin Media start-up slipped from a .6 to a microscopic .5.

Those ratings indicate a failed experiment, and heads are rolling on Hudson Street.

Liz Aiello, VP of programming for WEMP, has been shown the door, FishbowlNY has confirmed. Aiello, hired by Merlin in June, had her last day Thursday.

Though she arrived with an extensive broadcasting resume, Aiello lacked any All-News experience. Aiello was a managing editor and executive producer at WABC/Channel 7. Aiello arrived at WEMP following a stint at Sirius XM Radio as SVP for Martha Stewart‘s channels. Aiello also was Howard Stern‘s one-time news director at Sirius.

Aiello’s departure comes in the aftermath of COO Walter Sabo‘s, who left before New Years.

continued…
