The family, including his wife Debi, announced the wake and funeral are open to the public as a celebration of Jackson’s 97-year life.

The wake is Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. It will be held at the Frank Campbell Funeral Home, Madison Avenue and 81st Street.

Jackson’s funeral is Thursday, 11 a.m. at the Riverside Church, 490 Riverside Drive and 121st Street.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made to:

Hal Jackson’s Talented Teens International/Youth Development Foundation
1230 Park Avenue, PH-A
New York, NY

A pioneering radio host, Jackson died Wednesday after a short illness.

World’s Largest Short Film Festival, Tropfest, Comes to New York

Introducing the cultural phenonenom, Tropfest, a short film festival that originated in Australia. More than 100,000 attendees watch the one-night Sydney event. Tropfest, now in its 20th year, has since added other locations around the world.

But the World’s Largest Short Film Festival hasn’t truly “made it” until reaching New York, and that’s just weeks away.

Next month, Tropfest has its first New York-based and themed film festival. It takes places at Bryant Park in Midtown, and will cost you nothing to attend.

Australia native, John Polson, who now calls Brooklyn home, is the man responsible for bringing Tropfest to NYC. The Tropfest founder, and director of feature films Hide and Seek and Tenderness, is excited to give New York filmmakers their chance to grab the spotlight.

“This is on, we’re here to stay [in New York],” Polson tells FishbowlNY. “Short of a disaster.”

Gotham is no stranger to film festivals, with the Tribeca, co-founded by Robert De Niro. But this is exclusively a venue for short films with the main criteria being that any movie submitted can be no longer than seven minutes in length.

Polson says the more than 120 people submitting films surpasses his expectations.

Land A Cover Story With Your Weekend Getaways

When you’re jetting off for the long holiday weekend, remember the stories and places you come across — they could land you a cover story.

GO, the award-winning in-flight magazine for Airtran, is seeking in-depth travel pieces on markets that are less-covered. ”We want to inspire really interesting ways of seeing different places,” said Jaime Lowe, GO‘s executive editor. “We want as many people as possible to get excited about learning about other communities, being surrounded by new experiences and pushing themselves, through travel.”

While most mags advise new writers to break in through smaller, front- or back-of-book stories, GO has a meaty feature well that’s ripe for the pitchin’ — even for first-time freelancers. “We’re always looking for new writers with great stories,” said Lowe. “A great idea always wins. If there’s an excellent travel narrative, we’ll assign it.”

For more details on breaking in, read How To Pitch: GO.

How Advance’s Newspapers Dealt with Cutbacks

Advance Publications is cutting back production at four of its newspapers. The largest is New Orleans’ The Times-Picayune, but Alabama’s The Press-Register, The Huntington Times and The Birmingham News are all going to cut back to publishing only three times a week. It’s sad not only because communities depend on their local papers, but also because staffers will surely be dropped as a result of Advance’s announcement.

So how did the papers deal with it? Below a look at the front pages of the Times-Picayune, the Press-Register, the Huntington Times and the Birmingham News.

The Times-Picayune went big, with four out of the five stories dealing with the reduction.

As editorial director, he will report to Dan Wakeford, editor-in-chief of the two magazines.

Bauer has also named Terri White executive editor of Life & Style. White was most recently editor-in-chief of Buzz, an entertainment magazine published alongside Britain’s The Sun.

“The appointment of such strong talent to our executive editorial team reinforces the extraordinary quality that Bauer is known to deliver at the newsstand,” said Sebastian Raatz, executive vice president of Bauer Publishing. “The talent that we’ve positioned to lead these staffs will take Bauer’s entertainment group to the next level.”

Each move is effective immediately.

As in its previous life, Stephen Perrine will return as Editor-in-Chief and David Zinczenko will serve Best Life’s Editorial Director.

The men’s title launched in 2004 with a rate base of 500,000, but was shut down just five years later. “Best Life could not meet our internal benchmarks, and we have made the decision to focus our resources on our core brands,” Rodale’s former CEO Steven Murphy, said at the time.

Fondu is an iPhone app that allows users to share bite-size restaurant reviews with their friends (sort of like Yelp meets Twitter).

May Sweeps Results: WABC Overall Winner; WCBS Claims 5 p.m., WNYW Wins at 10 p.m.

WABC took the prize as most-watched station in New York. The just-concluded May sweeps give Channel 7 wins across virtually all dayparts, winning in households and other key demographics.

Eyewitness News at 11:00, led by Bill Ritter and Sade Baderinwa, with meteorologist Lee Goldberg and sports anchor Rob Powers, scored a 6.1 household rating, the highest for a major sweep in the last three years.

The 4 p.m. newscast was the only such broadcast that failed to produce a victory for Channel 7, and that can be traced to the success of Judge Judy on WCBS.

Thanks to that monster lead-in, WCBS declared itself a winner at 5 p.m. among households and total viewers.

WCBS says it’s the station’s first sweeps win since 1982.

“It is very gratifying to get such an incredible report card. Achieving significant ratings growth in every daypart makes it clear that we are getting a great team effort from the best local news team in the business and more and more people across the tri-state area are appreciating the quality coverage that we are providing every day,” said Peter Dunn, President, CBS Television Stations, and president and general manager, WCBS-TV.

Hal Jackson, Black Radio Legend, Dies at 96

Webster’s defines an icon as “any person or thing that is revered.”

That was Hal Jackson. The pioneering WBLS radio personality died yesterday at age 96. His cause of death was not released, but Jackson had a short illness.

Jackson maintained his Sunday Classics show, on the air as recently as a couple of weeks ago. He hosted the program with Clay Berry and Deborah Bolling Jackson, known to listeners as Debi B., or simply Jackson’s wife for 23 years.

“He was a big proponent of passing [information],” Skip Dillard, WBLS
program director, tells FishbowlNY. “I think that was one of his greatest assets.”

He co-founded WBLS original parent company, Inner City Broadcasting in 1971 with the late Percy Sutton, giving a new outlet to African-Americans. It was the first owned and operated African-American station in New York.

“He really is responsible for us being here today, because he encouraged Mr. Sutton to go through with the purchase of WLIB-FM at a time when AM was king,” Dillard says. “Hal really was a little ahead of his time and saw the potential for radio, and always believed that radio could grow and evolve.”

Last year, Inner City filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
