Job Description

Position Overview

Japanese company is seeking a Media Researcher/Assistant Reporter for its New York office.

This position is responsible for providing high-quality reporting, writing, and editorial support to correspondents, as well as the administrative support necessary to operate the office as a news organization.

The role may involve attending press conferences independently, traveling to other parts of the country, and collaborating with reporters in other locations, including bureaus in the Americas and in Tokyo.

Responsibilities
•In accordance with the editor-in-chief's instructions and correspondents' requests, gather information relevant to the editorial department's news-reporting activities and conduct verification, fact-checking, and follow-up research as needed.
•Research individuals or groups related to current events and trending news topics, with a clear understanding of the needs of the editor-in-chief, editors, correspondents, and subscribers.
•Prepare comprehensive, easy-to-understand summaries of findings and provide recommendations to correspondents.
•Build and maintain strong relationships with key policymakers, government officials, experts, and other influential figures.
•Assist correspondents in securing exclusive interviews with government officials and other key individuals.
•Stay informed on a wide range of U.S. political, economic, social, and cultural issues by attending press conferences and events, and by maintaining active communication with key contacts.
•Schedule interviews for correspondents; collect, analyze, and organize essential data related to those interviews.
•Assist correspondents with written and spoken English communication as needed.
•At the request of correspondents, locate potential interviewees, conduct initial interviews on their behalf, and provide detailed feedback on the results.
•Understand and align with the company's Group's editorial direction; engage in proactive networking to help the organization remain competitive and enhance content quality.
•Collect and organize data from various sources, including newspapers, magazines, television broadcasts, blogs, and online platforms.
•Maintain an up-to-date contact list of government officials, industry leaders, and other relevant individuals.
•Serve as a liaison between the New York office and external institutions, making necessary arrangements for news-reporting activities, such as securing media passes.
•Collaborate with other correspondents, under the editor-in-chief's direction, to enhance the overall value of the company's content and support the execution of newsroom operations.
•Perform other duties related to the operations of the editorial department as assigned.

Location
•New York City
•Requires a minimum of two in-office workdays per week; the remaining days may be worked remotely. The schedule is subject to change based on newsroom needs.

The employee must work in the office every day throughout the 90-day orientation period

Compensation
•$55,000-$65,000
•Additional compensation (Bonus)

Educational Requirement
•Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education / or experience in a related field

Requirements/Qualifications/Special Skills
•Strong sense of journalistic integrity and professionalism
•Proficiency in English and Japanese
•Solid knowledge of and keen interest in American affairs
•Ability to consistently produce high-quality output with minimum error under tight deadlines
•Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to quickly grasp supervisor's instructions and to keep supervisor informed of work status and progress
•Proficiency in basic software applications including Word and Excel
•Adequate compute literacy to learn and use current and future software applications and digital devices currently used by the company
•Willingness to perform additional editorial tasks as needed
