Join Our Team as an On-Call Teaching Artist

Do you thrive in creative environments and enjoy inspiring learners of all ages? The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is seeking dynamic, art-loving Teaching Artists to lead hands-on studio programs for school groups, families, and community partners. This part-time, on-call position is ideal for artists and educators who are passionate about teaching and believe in the power of art to connect and uplift diverse communities.

Position Details:

Location: Kansas City, MO (On-site with occasional offsite travel)

Status: Part-Time, On-Call

Schedule: Weekdays, Saturdays, and occasional evenings (based on programming needs)

Pay Rate: $22.00/hour

At the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, we believe that art is for everyone. Our Learning & Engagement division invites people of all ages and abilities to discover their creativity and deepen their connection to the museum’s collection through inclusive, hands-on programs. Teaching Artists are key to that experience—facilitating engaging, meaningful artmaking that reflects the richness and diversity of our community.

What You’ll Do

As a Teaching Artist, you will design and facilitate studio-based lessons that connect to the museum’s collection and exhibitions. Whether you're working with students in a School Workshop or leading an intergenerational community artmaking event, you'll help participants feel seen, supported, and inspired.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing and delivering developmentally appropriate, collection-based lesson plans
  • Leading engaging art workshops for a variety of audiences both onsite and in the community
  • Creating an inclusive environment that supports learners of all backgrounds and abilities
  • Collaborating with classroom assistants for materials prep, setup, and cleanup
  • Communicating professionally with teachers, caregivers, partners, and museum staff
  • Traveling to off-site locations for workshops as needed
  • Participating in professional development and staying current on best practices in museum education
  • Assisting with tasks such as supply ordering, inventory, and student exhibitions as needed


What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art, Art Education, or related field preferred
  • Experience teaching art to students of varying ages, backgrounds, and abilities
  • Creativity in lesson planning and a personal studio practice
  • Strong classroom management and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in fast-paced environments
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook and Teams
  • Availability Monday–Saturday between 9:00 AM and 8:30 PM
  • Reliable transportation for offsite programming
