Position Overview

Text Editors work behind the scenes to create fully accessible classroom materials for students with disabilities who require print accommodations. They work independently on projects with hard deadlines, ask questions, and solve document and editing problems. While work is busiest within the first few months of any semester, ongoing projects and summer hours are often available.

Job Description

  • 70% Convert materials from PDF, PowerPoint, and other formats to Microsoft Word
  • 15% Create image descriptions to ensure document accessibility
  • 10% Edit and tag documents to maximize readability by screen readers
  • 5% Additional duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  1. Prior experience working independently as demonstrated in the application materials.
  2. Prior experience with technology including using computers, scanning documents, and troubleshooting software applications as demonstrated in the application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience with using scanning equipment as demonstrated in the application materials.
  2. Experience using accessibility features in Word and Adobe as demonstrated in the application materials.
  3. Experience converting PDF documents to machine-readable text as demonstrated in the application materials.

Position Requirements

During the semester, the student hourly must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours. For summer, the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in at least 6 hours in the past spring semester, or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in at least 6 hours, or (3) be enrolled in summer session, or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments do not apply to Student Hourly appointments.

Employment Conditions

(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
