Overview
Court Reporter - Suffolk, Virginia (CRS05) – Full-time position with ProSidian Consulting, a management and operations consulting firm focusing on risk management, compliance, business processes, IT effectiveness, energy & sustainability, and talent management. Responsibilities
- Perform verbatim transcription services of testimony during agency proceedings requiring a transcribed record; the testimony may be given face-to-face or remotely via video teleconference (e.g., Microsoft Teams or Zoom for Government), or other remote means allowed by the Agency and the trier of fact.
- Provide real-time transcription of depositions and arbitrations; prepare rough drafts of transcripts and final transcripts per client requests; maintain exhibits during depositions as needed and coordinate with scopists and proofreaders.
- Attend depositions and other proceedings (online or in-person) requiring written transcripts using the company’s platform; provide transcripts to counsel and parties when requested; collaborate with engagement team members and client representatives.
- Test and provide feedback on the virtual litigation platform from the Court Reporter perspective to improve usability and functionality.
- Transcribe, proofread, and prepare transcripts for distribution using required court reporting tools and platforms; record verbatim proceedings of courts, legislative bodies, and other proceedings using stenograph devices.
- Maintain discretion and confidentiality; adapt to client requirements and delivery milestones; contribute to a world-class professional service in legal transcription and court reporting.
Qualifications
- At least two (2) years of court reporting experience; NCRA Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) or an equivalent credential (state certification or other recognized licensure). Credentials must be provided within one week of client request. Ability to report at speeds of 225 words per minute and translate takedown from steno to English. Working knowledge of legal and medical terminology, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and basic mathematics.
- Knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations governing court reporting and transcription activities; ability to use court reporting and transcription equipment; proficiency in Microsoft Office and related tools.
- Compliance with professional standards of the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA); maintaining exhibits and documentary evidence; effective communication with counsel, coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
- Consecutive employment in a position with comparable responsibilities within the past five years in the Virginia court reporting context (preferred).
- Proficiency in English to read portions of the transcript during proceedings and, if asked, clarify inaudible statements; ability to read portions aloud when requested.
- Flexibility to accommodate turn-around requirements; ability to administer oaths; experience with Administrative Investigation Board (AIB), Equal Opportunity hearings, MSPB, or arbitration hearings preferred.
- Proficiency with the English language to read during proceedings when requested and to clarify inaudible statements; ability to provide accurate, well-documented, and properly formatted transcripts.
- Must be able to obtain appropriate equipment and be punctual, professional, and capable of delivering as required by the client.

- Concentration: Court Reporters must be able to concentrate for long periods and remain focused on dialogue despite distractions.
- Detail Oriented: Must produce error-free work as transcripts are legal records.
- Listening Skills: Must give full attention to speakers and capture every word.
- Writing Skills: Strong grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to bend, lift up to 20 pounds, reach, walk, stand, and sit for extended periods (with or without accommodation).
- Proficiency in English: Ability to read and understand all transcript materials and clarify inaudible statements when needed.
- Experience with Administrative Investigation Board (AIB), MSPB, or arbitration hearings is preferred.
- Ability to administer oaths; notary is required for depositions.
- Flexible to accommodate client turnaround times; deliver thorough, accurate work that meets established criteria.
Education and Experience
Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalency and a minimum of two (2) years of court reporting experience. High school diploma or GED required; completion of apprentice/internship training in court reporting and sufficient coursework to obtain certification as a professional court reporter from a recognized licensing or accrediting agency, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licensing Requirements
- Professional certification as a Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) through the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) or Certified Verbatim Reporter (CVR) through the National Verbatim Reporters Association (NVRA).
- Certification by the Board of Court Reporting of the Judicial Council of Virginia.
- NCRA RPR certification if your state does not offer a license; CSR license, where applicable; real-time certification through NCRA or another certifying body; notary license.
- Valid driver’s license and U.S. citizenship; ability to obtain required security clearances or access as needed; e-Verify compliance.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Adobe) and related tools; eligibility for Facility Access Authorization.
- Other requirements and conditions of employment may apply; willingness to complete a Financial Disclosure Statement; ability to qualify for background investigations up to Top Secret or Q clearance.
Travel
Occasional travel may be required within the Norfolk, Virginia area and surrounding Hampton Roads locations (e.g., Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg/James City County). Travel is coordinated with the technical point of contact and approved in writing by the Contracting Officer in advance, in accordance with Federal Travel Regulations.
Location
Work shall be conducted within 50 miles of Norfolk, Virginia. The majority of proceedings will be at the Agency’s offices in Norfolk; testimony may also occur at other Agency-designated spaces, including ships or tribunal spaces. The ProSidian Court Reporter must be flexible to provide services at locations within the Hampton Roads area as required.
