Position Title: Senior UI/UX Designer
Location: Austin TX
Position Status: Contract

Overview:
A public sector client of ours in Austin, Texas is looking for a Senior UX/UI Designer with expertise around Enterprise Systems for a 1-year contract that is likely to extend. This role will require up to 3 days onsite in their Austin office.
The Senior UI/UX Designer will play a central role in improving accessibility, usability, and responsiveness of the client's eligibility systems. This position requires 8 or more years of professional experience and relies on expertise, judgment, and creativity to plan and accomplish goals. The designer will independently perform a wide variety of complex tasks with a high degree of latitude.

The role involves understanding business objectives and challenges, identifying alternative solutions, and conducting cost/benefit analyses. The designer will analyze user requirements, operational procedures, and problems to automate processes or improve existing systems. Duties include collaborating with personnel to document workflows, writing detailed descriptions of user needs, defining program functions, and determining feasibility of requested changes within system capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead user research initiatives and journey mapping to gain deep insights into user interactions and identify opportunities for optimization.
  • Design user experiences and interfaces, including wireframes, prototypes, and visual hierarchies, in accordance with accessibility guidelines and branding standards.
  • Maintain an extensive UX design portfolio demonstrating expertise in research, information architecture, wireframing, prototyping (low and high-fidelity), and usability testing.
  • Collaborate with Code for America and cross-functional teams to apply industry best practices in UI/UX design.
  • Engage in discovery workshops, feedback sessions, and sprint planning to ensure design alignment with business objectives.
  • Utilize tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, and Hotjar to design, test, and optimize responsive and accessible interfaces.
  • Conduct usability testing and apply SEO optimization strategies.
  • Design user interfaces for AI/ML systems with a focus on explainable AI (XAI) and human-AI interaction principles.
  • Develop solutions for complex system design in highly regulated domains such as government services, healthcare, or finance.
  • Create data visualizations to present complex data and AI insights in clear and understandable formats.
  • Advocate for user-centered design principles, ensuring empathy and accessibility (WCAG and related standards).
  • Communicate design solutions effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Bonus: Apply prior experience with eligibility determination systems or other rule-based, data-intensive applications.

Required Experience:


  • 11 years of hands-on experience designing user interfaces and experiences for enterprise systems, including wireframes, prototypes, and visual hierarchies using tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, and Sketch.
  • 11 years of demonstrated ability to collaborate with technical and non-technical teams, translating business needs into intuitive design solutions that align with accessibility and branding standards.
  • 10 years of experience applying UX design principles such as hierarchy, contrast, and alignment to create responsive and accessible web and mobile interfaces.
  • 10 years of experience creating wireframes and prototypes that support agile development cycles, including transitions from sketch to high visual fidelity.
Preferred Experience:
  • 5 years of experience designing graphical diagrams and visual narratives to communicate timelines, workflows, and system architecture.
  • 3 years of demonstrated ability to facilitate design workshops and feedback sessions with stakeholders, ensuring alignment with business goals and user needs.
  • 3 years of experience with strong multitasking skills, managing multiple design streams across concurrent projects.
  • 3 years of experience with a Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, or a related field (equivalent experience may be substituted).
