The Opportunity The Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Engineering Technician 6 functions in a senior lead engineering technician capacity. Under general direction, modify or create deliverables and perform design assignments by applying basic engineering principles and established design practices to develop complex design concepts. Provide technical guidance and may direct other engineering professionals. The ideal candidate will have advanced experience with AutoDesk Inventor (SDS) and advanced experience with physical substation design (AIS and/or GIS).

Job Summary Functions in a senior lead engineering technician capacity. Under general direction, modify or create deliverables and perform assignments of a design nature by applying basic engineering principles and established design practices to develop complex design concepts. Provide technical guidance and may provide direction to other engineering professionals.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Standards: Pro-activate provides guidance and direction by utilizing knowledge of standards, systems, document control, departmental guides, applicable codes and Black & Veatch policies and procedures

Reviews project requirements and determine the correct format and contents of the required deliverables

Quality / Continuous Improvement: Promotes quality within project/group/section

Reviews design inputs to ensure consistency

Ensures deliverables comply with codes and standards

Responsible for drawing control and historical records per project methods

Demonstrates accuracy and drives continual improvement and change management

Engineering Production: Applies basic engineering principles to develop moderately complex design concepts

Judgment and input interpretation in deliverables

Provides technical guidance to other professionals

Performs design calculations, material quantities, estimates, and records

Uses advanced applications (e.g., modeling and design software)

May review others’ deliverables and define work assignments

May program control systems or participate in plant start-up activities

Project Coordination: Coordinates with design group personnel to review project information; may support field activities and communicate design requirements, progress and schedules

Client Focus: Assists in identifying key client interests and drivers; communicates these to project team and helps accommodate concerns

Knowledge Sharing, Innovation and Technology: Assists in developing design standards and process improvements; identifies training needs; may be recognized for expertise

People Management: Assists with performance management, career planning, and mentoring; supervises engineering technicians

Resource Management: Assists in staffing level monitoring and identifying resource needs

Preferred Qualifications

Associate Degree in Drafting or Engineering Design Related Technology (preferred)

Bachelor Degree in Engineering Design Related Technology (preferred)

Typically a minimum of 8 years related work experience

Technical skills: Advanced experience with AutoDesk Inventor (SDS); advanced substation design (AIS/GIS); proficiency with CADD and information modeling tools

Strong knowledge of engineering standards, document control, and BV policies

Intermediate knowledge of industry trends and company quality program
