Assistant Professor of Speech Communication/Tenure Track

Overview

The ideal applicant will teach a minimum of 15 credits (or 9 if teaching all graduate courses) per term (fall/spring), which may include in-person, online, day, evening, weekend, off-campus, or distance education courses. The candidate will teach communication studies courses in the undergraduate program and communication theory, research methods and other core courses in the graduate program. The appointee will manage all aspects of the Department’s assessment and accreditation reports and will represent the Mass Communication department serving as a special liaison to the University’s athletic program. The position includes assisting in recruiting, advising, and registering students, serving on university committees, and assuming other responsibilities as requested. The Department of Mass Communication seeks applicants with a commitment to the University’s mission; the mission of historically black colleges and universities; teaching, learning, and student success; integration of learning outcomes assessment into course development and teaching; use of current and emerging technologies to enhance instruction; and other responsibilities that contribute to the progress of the University.

Required Qualifications

A terminal degree in Human Communication Studies, Theatre, Mass Communication, or a related field is required for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. ABD candidates may be considered; however, the appointment will be conditioned on attainment of the terminal degree within a specified time.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Credentials with a primary emphasis in communication studies, rhetoric, public speaking, forensics, training and development or leadership.
  • Experience in teaching upper and/or lower division courses utilizing current supporting and trending technologies at the university level.
  • Experience in professional public discourse and coaching speech and debate.
  • Familiarity with accreditation processes and assessment, including data collection, organization, and analysis.
