Overview

The City of Westminster is seeking a compassionate and collaborative librarian who loves working with all ages. The Supervising Librarian position provides reference and readers’ advisory to all ages, creates and delivers community-focused programming, and facilitates outreach and library services in the Westminster community. The Youth Services Supervising Librarian provides reference and readers’ advisory to all ages, creates and delivers community-focused programming, and facilitates outreach to support early literacy in the Irving Street community. The Youth Services Supervising Librarian regularly works the information desk, delivers outstanding customer service, answers a wide range of research and reference questions, and creates engaging displays to highlight the library’s collection. This role also involves collection maintenance, staff scheduling, programming, and supervision of associates. This position reports to the Library Branch Coordinator, with Irving Street Library as home base and occasional desk shifts at College Hill.

The Irving Street branch is a neighborhood library at the heart of Historic Westminster. It serves a diverse population, including Hispanic, Hmong, and Native American communities, with a wide range of socioeconomic and generational backgrounds. Bilingual candidates are highly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities and Duties

Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks

  1. Under the general supervision of the Branch Coordinator, provide patron services.
  2. Deliver outstanding customer service at Information Desks for staff and library patrons of all ages.
  3. Provide Readers’ Advisory services across genres for patrons of all ages.
  4. Conduct professional and effective reference interviews and research; assist with interlibrary loan requests.
  5. Assist the Collection Development team with regular weeding and purchases based on anticipated patron demand.
  6. Create and deliver programs for adults, including current and future trends in library programming.
  7. Organize, publicize, and present programs, tours, and outreach events for user groups and other librarians.
  8. Create engaging materials and displays with a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  9. Supervise associates and support staff scheduling.
  10. Maintain familiarity with adult collections and provide input on collection building and maintenance.
  11. Address and resolve patron or staff complaints, or forward to supervisor as needed.
  12. Possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record.
  13. Maintain regular and punctual attendance.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Coordinate and deliver programs and events with other departments, neighboring libraries, and local businesses.
  2. Schedule rooms and equipment; assist on other desks as needed.
  3. Supervise paraprofessional staff and/or volunteers; assist the Library Branch Coordinator with budget preparation and administration.

Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job, and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City’s discretion.

Education, Experience, Skills, and Certifications

Required:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college.
  • Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent within six months of hire.
  • Experience providing services and/or programs for adults and/or teens.
  • Demonstrated commitment to community engagement and adult literacy.

Preferred:

  • Supervisory experience.
  • Spanish language skills.
  • Previous professional public library experience in a public services role.

Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Physical Requirements

Work is physical and entails the following: occasional sitting and standing; constant standing and walking; frequent crouching, squatting, bending, and twisting; climbing and balancing to use step stools or ladders; constant grasping, reaching, and fine motor skills to handle materials; constant near vision for screens and labels; frequent hearing for communication; frequent lifting up to 40 pounds, with occasional heavier lifts and moving carts; occasional carrying for up to 40 pounds over distance; occasional pushing/pulling of carts up to 150 pounds.

Working Conditions

Work is performed indoors in a public library setting with high public contact and mobility throughout facilities.

Required Materials and Equipment

Frequent use of telephones, computers, printers, scanners, RFID/barcode equipment, and AV equipment. Regular use of personal transportation between facilities for library services and programs.
