Ohio Universitys Musical Theater program is committed to a rigorous course of study which fosters artistic, cognitive, and performative skills. It is intended to advance the education and training of motivated, curious, self-reliant, adaptable theater artists. The Bachelor of Fina Arts ( BFA ) Musical Theater Track is specifically suited for students interested in creating the next generation of musical theater. The program focuses on developing exciting new work as well as are training musical theater actors who are equally comfortable in plays, film, and media. The Music Director/Assistant Professor of Instruction position will also work with OHIO Universitys professional theater company, Tantrum Theater.

Job Description: Ohio Universitys Musical Theater program is committed to a rigorous course of study which fosters artistic, cognitive, and performative skills. It is intended to advance the education and training of motivated, curious, self-reliant, adaptable theater artists. The Bachelor of Fina Arts ( BFA ) Musical Theater Track is specifically suited for students interested in creating the next generation of musical theater. The Music Director/Assistant Professor of Instruction position will also work with OHIO Universitys professional theater company, Tantrum Theater.

Responsibilities
  • Teach and co-teach undergraduate courses in the BFA Theater Performance (Musical Theater & Acting tracks) curriculum, including musical theater workshops, song performance, pit orchestra, and other teaching responsibilities as assigned by the Director of the School of Theater.
  • Serve as music director for a minimum of one full production each academic year, and other special events and concerts as assigned.
  • Support advising and recruiting/retention of students.
  • This position requires days, nights, and weekends, including, but not limited to, technical and dress rehearsals. Hours required as dictated by academic and production schedules.
Minimum Qualifications
  • MM, MFA , DMA by the start date of appointment
  • Experience in musical theater
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in developing new musicals
  • Knowledge and experience with music technology used in musical theater, including keyboard programming, arranging, notation, backing/click tracks, etc.
  • Ability to teach music skills (theory and ear-training) to incoming musical theater students
  • Experience and ability in serving as a vocal coach
  • Experience in university teaching and mentoring students of diverse backgrounds
  • Ongoing professional engagement
  • Extensive knowledge of the musical theater and popular/contemporary music repertoire
  • Professional experience as a music director, conductor, and accompanist
Position Details and Benefits

This is a nine-month renewable non-tenure track co-appointment in the Schools of Theater and Music.
