Overview
Audio Visual Tech I/II at Central Michigan University. Position supports university audio/visual systems, including design, installation, configuration, security, and user support for devices and connections. Responsible for preventative and repair maintenance of audio-visual equipment and for knowledge transfer to student employees who assist with service calls.
Responsibilities
- Provide deployment, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of audio/visual systems and components.
- Configure, secure, and support new user devices and connections; provide supplemental computer support in colleges.
- Develop maintenance routines and techniques to prevent downtime; modify installation methods to reduce failure points; transfer knowledge to student employees.
- Alter and modify existing electronic apparatus for demonstrations or instructional use; instruct primary users in proper equipment use.
- Advance troubleshooting and repair of AV systems, and evaluation of new cabling and cabling techniques (Tech II).
- Ensure installations comply with local, state, and federal codes and CMU policies; act as foreman on large AV installations and interface with other trades and project management (Tech II).
- Assist with project management, system design, and coordination with project managers and construction crews to ensure proper infrastructure for mediated classrooms.
- Supervise or train other AV Technicians as needed and coordinate duties within the AV team.
Qualifications
- Audio Visual Tech I (ST-6): High school diploma or GED; two years of relevant job experience; knowledge of digital video formats, encryption, networking, and cabling techniques; ability to maintain preventative maintenance schedules; ability to apply technical knowledge to design and manufacture of new electronic devices; positive interpersonal and communication skills; ability to perform essential functions with or without accommodation.
- Audio Visual Tech II (ST-7): Meets all Tech I qualifications plus five years of relevant experience with at least three years in installation, repair, and preventative maintenance; certification from ICIA (CTS) or other relevant training (e.g., Crestron DMC-D/DMC-E, Biamp AVLC); demonstrated ability to terminate and splice CAT5E/6/6A/7, coaxial, microphone/line/speaker cabling, fiber, and related connectors; ability to design equipment rack layouts with proper airflow and cable routing; knowledge of video transmission methods (HDBaseT, NDI, etc.), audio transmission methods (AVB, Dante), and networking concepts (NAT, ports, VLANs, MAC); familiarity with automated equipment control systems; ability to perform essential functions with accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Audio Visual Tech I: Demonstrated creative problem-solving and ability to perform under deadlines.
- Audio Visual Tech II: Associate degree in Equipment Technology and/or Electronics Engineering Technology; meets Tech I preferred qualifications.
Duties & Responsibilities (continued)
- Tech I: Demonstrate ownership of AV systems, resolve end-user issues, understand system functionality and dependencies, deploy and maintain AV equipment, manage downtime reduction, and train student staff.
- Tech II: Perform advanced troubleshooting, evaluate new cabling techniques, ensure compliance with codes and CMU standards, serve as foreman on large installations, act as project manager for AV projects, assist with system programming changes, and coordinate with internal stakeholders and construction teams.
