About the Role
Our client, a leading publicly traded media company, is seeking a Sr. Director, Content Controller to oversee controllership activities for TV Networks programming and production costs, including licensed and owned content, live sports, and news. This highly visible role will collaborate closely with the TV Networks finance organization, technical accounting, and business leaders to ensure accurate content accounting, strong controls, and compliance with U.S. GAAP and SOX. The ideal candidate is a CPA with extensive experience in content and production accounting within complex organizations, preferably in the media and entertainment industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee controllership activities for TV Networks programming and production costs, including licensed content, owned content, live sports, and news production.
- Ensure transactions are properly recorded, reviewed, and supported in compliance with GAAP, SOX, and company policies.
- Partner with the TV Networks finance team as a trusted advisor on reporting, controls, and policy matters.
- Lead monthly and quarterly close processes, including review of Balance Sheets, Income Statements, Cash Flows, and supporting disclosure schedules.
- Review journal entries and reconciliations, ensuring adjustments and true-ups are timely and accurate.
- Manage key content accounting processes, including amortization curves, impairment analysis, and assessment of new transactions in collaboration with business and technical accounting teams.
- Oversee and review participations and residuals processes.
- Assess and strengthen the control environment, focusing on high-risk areas.
- Maintain effective internal controls over financial reporting and ensure SOX compliance.
- Manage both internal and external audits related to content accounting.
- Deliver accurate and timely financial and management reporting (regular and ad hoc).
- Mentor and develop staff, setting clear objectives and fostering a collaborative, supportive team culture.
- Partner with controllership and IT teams on reporting system enhancements (e.g., amortization systems).
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (or equivalent).
- CPA required.
- Minimum of 8+ years of relevant accounting/finance experience.
- Strong knowledge of general accounting practices and financial reporting standards (U.S. GAAP).
- Experience with content or production accounting strongly preferred.
- Proven leadership, team development, and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively across multiple teams in a dynamic environment.
