Overview
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol's primary mission is to reduce collisions and make the highways of North Carolina as safe as possible. In addition to enforcing traffic laws, state troopers guide traffic during hurricane evacuations, re-route traffic around hazardous incidents, and are prepared to respond to acts of terrorism. The Electronics Technician II (Radio Engineer I) maintains mobile and portable telecommunications equipment in state and patrol vehicles. The assigned workstation is the Troop H Headquarters Radio Shop in Monroe, NC (Union County).
Responsibilities
- Install, manage, program, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and/or exchange modules in equipment including:
- Mobile and portable voice/data transmitting and receiving equipment
- Mobile Data Computers (MDC)
- Digital processed speed measurement instruments
- Mobile and fixed video surveillance equipment
- Mobile emergency lighting and warning systems
- Mobile antennas
- Special electronics and telecommunications testing equipment and related electronic, electrical, and mechanical equipment
- Diagnose and repair diverse electronic and telecommunications equipment
- Continuously learn and adapt to evolving methods, processes, and protocols
- Read and interpret technical manuals and reference materials
- Apply knowledge of NCSHP rules, regulations, policies, procedures, directives, documentation, and training materials
Qualifications, Education and Licensing
- Associate's degree in electronics from an accredited institution and two years of progressive experience in repair and maintenance of complex electronic systems (or equivalent combination of training and experience)
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within the first year of employment, a Federal Communications Commission General Radiotelephone Operator License (GROL) or equivalent that authorizes establishment, operation, and repair of fixed/mobile voice/data transceivers and related systems
- Ability to document work history and education on the application; transcripts may be attached as supplements
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Familiarity with reading and applying technical manuals and reference materials
- Mercury-Based Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan considerations per State Human Resources Act
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose and repair electronic/telecommunications equipment
- Experience with vehicle electronics and OEM components is a plus
