The Data Communications Team designs, configures, maintains, upgrades and monitors UCSD’s campus-wide local, wide area, and wireless networks. It supports the campus's enterprise routers, switches, wireless access points and associated management tools. These devices operate on Gigabit Ethernet, 10 Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax, and other technologies in a heterogeneous multi-protocol environment. POSITION OVERVIEW: Applies skills as an experienced network communications professional with a full understanding of industry practices and relevant policies and procedures in providing consultation, evaluation, configuration, installation, troubleshooting and testing of wireless network hardware and software to include access points, controllers, routers, switches, and other networking equipment. Resolves a wide range of complex network issues. Provides expert-level RF troubleshooting, including addressing interference/rogue access points, coverage issues, access point hardware problems, PoE and other technical issues across campus. Conducts RF site surveys and field tests, both in the field and predictive surveys of buildings under construction. Creates wireless network AP placement designs, considering various factors including network performance requirements, anticipated uses, user density, installation constraints, environmental RF characteristics, anticipated RF coverage and propagation, industry best practices, and other factors. Implement complex Ethernet switch configuration and testing. RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides design, engineering and maintenance assistance on the UCSD campus WLAN/LAN/WAN. Provides consultation, evaluation, installation and testing of network devices and network management systems to include wireless access points, WLAN controllers, routers, switches and other network equipment manufactured by Cisco and other vendors in a heterogeneous multi-protocol environment. Installs and troubleshoots devices on campus wireless, fiber optic, and ethernet networks. Applies skills as a seasoned, experienced wireless communications professional with a full understanding of industry practices and relevant policies and procedures. Resolves a wide range of complex network issues. Demonstrates competency in selecting methods and techniques to obtain solutions. QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. Thorough understanding of various network hardware platforms, network related protocols and software including OSI layer 3 and layer 2 concepts; knowledge of wireless 802.11 protocol suite, CAPWAP, WPA2, TCP/IP, SNMP, Ethernet, routing protocols and related concepts. Thorough knowledge of wireless RF and spectrum concepts, mathematics, and use in wireless data networks. Ability to use wireless network management software and spectrum analyzer to document, configure, analyze, and troubleshoot wireless networks. Hands-on experience with configuring wired and wireless network hardware (currently Cisco) such as routers, switches, access points, WLAN controllers, and network management systems. Working knowledge of best practices for AP placement, RF survey procedures, and other wireless functions. Ability to independently conduct daily walking RF surveys and AP troubleshooting using appropriate hardware and software. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Strong interpersonal and written communication skills. Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to set priorities, gather, organize and analyze data, and meet deadlines. SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Required to hold valid driver's license and follow applicable policies; may enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program. Available to work evenings and weekends. Willing to travel as required. Willing to schedule vacation on a yearly basis and to work on a rotating on-call basis. Job offer contingent upon satisfactory background check results. This position has recently been accreted by TX union and will be a part of that union moving forward. This position is eligible for full benefits on day one of hire: health/dental/vision, vacation/holidays, work/life balance, UC Retirement Plan, and pet insurance. Details available from UCSD Benefits and Work/Life resources. For compensation information, the annual full pay range is $88,000 - $161,600 (pro-rated if appointment percentage is less than 100%). Pay Transparency Act: Annual Full Pay Range and Hourly Equivalent are provided to reflect compensation. The final offered salary will consider experience, skills, and other factors.
