OVERVIEW Heartbeat Music and Performing Arts Academy is seeking a contract Percussion Music Instructor for the middle/high school college prep music program. The instructor will be collaborating with the Director of Media & Performing Arts to build the technical and creative skills needed for students to excel in their marching band program, be fully prepped for HBCU college marching band auditions, and help guide their own personal development and growth as a musician. The Percussion Instructor will lead intermediate to advanced-level classes in rudimentary and mallet percussion classes, cultivating an environment that fosters encouragement, creativity, support, and a deep admiration for music.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES ⦁ Lesson Planning: Develop and implement structured lesson plans for intermediate to advanced middle and high school students in the after-school program, aligned with HBCU audition requirements. ⦁ Classroom Culture: Establish a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages creativity, learning, and respect among students. ⦁ Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with the Director of Media & Performing Arts, other teaching artists, staff members, parents, and volunteers to ensure a cohesive and supportive learning experience. ⦁ Student Assessment: Monitor and assess student progress, providing constructive feedback and guidance to students and parents to facilitate growth and development. ⦁ Performance Coordination: Prepare students for performances, technical evaluations, and showcases, including prep for etudes, solos, costume coordination, and rehearsals.
TIME COMMITMENT ⦁ Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4:30pm-6:00pm
QUALIFICATIONS ⦁ Advanced-level playing of multiple percussive instruments. ⦁ Strong understanding of music theory. ⦁ 3 years of teaching experience preferred, but not required. ⦁ College marching band and/or jazz band experience a plus. ⦁ Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural skills both in person and in writing.
