Overview

Position: Administrative, managerial, professional, and technical library work supervising and coordinating the activities within the Alachua County Library District. This role applies modern professional library techniques and supervises a staff of professional, paraprofessional, technical, and clerical employees and volunteers. Work is performed under the direction of a higher-level supervisor and is reviewed through conferences, reports and observation of results.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, direct, control, and coordinate the activities within the Alachua County Library District.
  • Provide oversight for and manage the selection, acquisition, cataloging, processing, and maintenance of the library\'s physical and digital collections.
  • Monitor collection performance through standard library collection metrics and apply analysis to improve district-wide collection development and management practices.
  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of subordinate supervisors and employees, determine work procedures and schedules, issue instructions, assign duties, review work, and conduct performance reviews.
  • Prepare operating budgets and long-range plan proposals for the department or branch; monitor budgets and recommend budget transfers; ensure fiscal oversight of library funds.
  • Negotiate and evaluate vendor contracts and discounts; maintain relationships with vendors, publishers, and service providers.
  • Assist in establishing plans, priorities, and procedures and recommend changes in organizational structure and resource allocation to meet branch/departmental and District goals.
  • Stay informed of current trends and professional techniques; communicate findings to staff through reading, professional organizations, workshops, and conferences.
  • Develop materials collections district-wide by recommending acquisitions, rotating materials between Headquarters and branches, and weeding as needed.
  • Coordinate, manage, and review special projects and a variety of programs for the public.
  • Provide comprehensive bibliographic, reference, and reader\'s advisory services in person and by phone using printed materials, online services, and referrals; guide patrons in selection, organization, interpretation of library materials, and effective use of technology and facilities.
  • Analyze the impact of new technologies on library services and recommend actions.
  • Arrange for maintenance and security of buildings, including opening and closing; serve as Library District liaison to the community and schools.
  • Ensure patron compliance with policies and procedures through effective communication and enforcement.
  • Drive a District vehicle to perform duties at various library branches as required.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master\'s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited program (or closely related field).
  • Three years of professional-level library experience in collection management and technical services, including two years of supervisory experience.
  • Valid State of Florida driver\'s license and insurability by the District\'s insurance carrier; own transportation required.
  • Successful completion of drug screening and criminal history background investigation prior to employment.
  • Evening and weekend work hours may be required.
  • Ability to supervise and coordinate subordinate staff; analyze library problems and propose practical solutions; and communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Proficiency with word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet applications; ability to use emerging technology for patron service.
  • Knowledge of library systems, cataloging, classification, metadata, and current trends in public library service.
