Overview
The Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences at the University of New Mexico invites applications for a Postdoctoral fellow position. We are seeking a research-focused and experienced individual with strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills. The successful candidate will conduct research in Dr. Islam's lab in the department. Dr. Islam's research focuses on cornea regeneration including cell therapy.
The successful candidate will conduct research involving animal models, specifically using the rabbit cornea. Responsibilities also include publishing findings in leading journals and conferences, leading group projects, and collaborating with both graduate and undergraduate students on research initiatives. The candidate should be available to start immediately.
The ideal candidate should have:
- A record of peer-reviewed publications and prior research experience in ophthalmology, including experience in handling rabbits for ocular research (preferably, but not limited to, studies involving the rabbit cornea) and conducting laboratory experiments.
- Demonstrated experience in cell biology techniques.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Applicants must hold a PhD in Biological, Biomedical Sciences, Ophthalmology, or a closely related field.
- Eligible to work in the U.S.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with a rabbit model for ophthalmic research.
- A demonstrated commitment to cultivating an understanding of the diverse cultures of New Mexico and to the university’s mission to serve local and global communities.
New Mexico is known as the Land of Enchantment. Albuquerque is a culturally rich and naturally beautiful city, with good weather year-round. The Sandia Mountain wilderness is 20 minutes from UNM. The area has a lively arts scene, with proximity to Santa Fe and Madrid, NM. There are two national laboratories nearby: Sandia and Los Alamos.
