Salary: The previously determined range for this position was $34.36/hr to $76.13/hr. Final rate offered will be determined by the collective bargaining agreement, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, and budget constraints. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a rate at or near the top of the full range for a position.
This position requires Illinois residency within 180 days of the hire date. (RNs only)

Position Summary
The Staff Nurse I provides direct patient care and works to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care, and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. The role integrates professional practice model, current standards, and clinical experience to provide high-quality patient care as measured by nursing quality standards and governing/accrediting bodies. The Staff Nurse I engages with patients and families to advocate for the patient, develops educational plans, and collaborates with the health care team to promote effective care. The Staff Nurse I participates in organizational, departmental, and shared leadership activities and supports department goals in daily practice.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Develops, implements, and updates the patient’s plan of care based on ongoing assessment and input from the patient’s family.
- Shares information and collaborates with the health care team to promote effective patient care.
- Verifies and implements orders from physician, physician assistant, and/or advance practice nurse; performs interventions as prescribed and documents in the electronic medical record.
- Engages with patients and families to develop an appropriate educational plan.
- Recognizes symptoms, establishes priorities, and responds to changing patient needs.
- Engages support personnel by delegating appropriate tasks per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act and provides support and feedback.
- Advocates for patients, families, and the nursing profession.
- Integrates knowledge and evidence-based practice to provide quality patient care.
- Assumes role of Charge Nurse when assigned, utilizing appropriate resources.
- Collaborates with other nurses to identify and promote learning experiences for staff and students; serves as a preceptor or resource when needed.
- Maintains ongoing professional growth and development.
- Monitors and documents the patient’s condition pre-, intra-, and post-procedure; assesses and addresses pain levels and administers appropriate pain medications.
- Administers medications and monitors conscious sedation during procedures; monitors sedation levels and vital signs.
- Assists with procedures and pre-cleaning of endoscopy scopes and equipment.
- Knowledge of endoscopy instruments, aseptic technique, and infection control practices.
- Performs processing and high-level disinfection of endoscopes and equipment, with documentation and quality control.
- Operates equipment for processing and disinfection, with daily quality control and documentation.
- Sets up and cleans procedure rooms; coordinates equipment setup and patient transportation/positioning as needed.
- Maintains a clean, safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
- Ensures patient stability before discharge and provides comprehensive discharge instructions; educates patients on condition, treatment, and post-procedure care.
- Manages inventory, restocks supplies, and maintains organized supply areas.
- Performs equipment inventory and coordinates with leadership on discrepancies; arranges repairs when needed.
- Maintains endoscope towers and imaging recording systems; supports research efforts within UI Health.
- Supports UI Health and Endoscopy service mission, philosophy, and goals.
- Interviews prospective employees as requested; collaborates with instructors to promote learning experiences for nursing students.
- Represents the nursing profession in internal and external forums; maintains clinical competence and continuing education.
- Meets personal mandatory requirements: current Illinois RN license, BLS, TB compliance, and mandated in-services.
- Participates in continuous quality improvement data collection and resolves work-related issues constructively.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois.
- Current BLS/CPR and/or other required unit-specific certifications.
- Current ACLS.
- On-call required.
- Basic computer skills with ability to become proficient in Electronic Health Record systems.
- Ability to work independently and as part of the endoscopy team.
- Ability to interpret and apply hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
- Independently motivated, organized, and reliable with excellent attendance and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- 2 years of experience with GI procedures (preferred).
- BSN (preferred).
- 2 years of experience in pre- and post-procedural recovery and assessment in endoscopy (preferred).
- Experience in therapeutic endoscopy, endoscopy call, and pulmonary procedures (preferred).
- Clinical knowledge and understanding of endoscopy procedures (preferred).
