Distant Moon’s Film Editor reports to our studio in Leesburg, VA and works under the creative direction of our directors and/or Post Production Supervisor to produce assemblies, rough cuts, fine cuts, and final cuts that meet Distant Moon’s high standards and capture the vision of the client as interpreted by a project’s creative lead. The Film Editor reports directly to the Post Production Supervisor.

Overview

Role: Film Editor at Distant Moon, Inc. Location: Leesburg, VA (in-person).

Responsibilities

  • Work under the direction of the Post Production Supervisor for all creative feedback and report to the Post Production Manager for scheduling and deliverables.
  • Collaborate with project directors and/or the Post Production Supervisor to ensure the goals of an edit are met at every stage.
  • Follow Distant Moon’s standard operating procedures for all editorial work.
  • Organize, sync, and categorize footage for Distant Moon edits.
  • Lead editing for assemblies, rough cuts, fine cuts, and final cuts when applicable.
  • Serve as the initial round of review before work goes to a supervisor or director.
  • Provide basic sound mixing to achieve appropriate levels for voice and music until the object edit is sent to the sound department for final mix and design.
  • Source archival images, video, and other online assets as directed by the post-production supervisor.
  • Find and assemble music tracks as needed.
  • Upload edits to Frame.io and share review links internally.
  • Travel for on-set/on-location production as applicable to interests, potentially at Distant Moon’s expense.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Minimum of five years of experience in post-production and editorial.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud applications: Premiere Pro, Media Encoder, Photoshop, After Effects.
  • Proficiency in macOS.
  • Strong understanding and passion for filmmaking elements including narrative, color, flow, timing, sound, and composition.
  • Motivated and self-directed with a lead-by-example work ethic.
  • Commitment to excellence, creativity, collaboration, integrity, and willingness to self-examine and revise work.
  • Willingness to receive constructive criticism and continuously improve skills.

Reporting to this position: No direct reports.

Additional Preferred Skills (Not Required)

  • Adobe Audition and Illustrator
  • Interest in long-form narrative content and being part of a growing film studio.
  • Live stream and live sound experience.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Physical demands: Ability to walk, sit, use hands to handle tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, balance, stoop; may lift up to 50 pounds; vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
  • Work environment: Typically open-space office setting with usually minimal noise.
