Overview

The Ohio State University College of Medicine and the Wexner Medical Center seek an Optometrist, Low Vision, to join the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. Academic rank and track commensurate with academic record and experience.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provide eye care for adults coping with conditions that result in limited vision (e.g., macular degeneration, albinism, retinitis pigmentosa, optic atrophy). Some pediatric care may be provided at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
  • Fulfill clinical responsibilities as part of faculty duties, with or without trainee involvement. Teach clinical and/or didactic content to medical students, residents, fellows, and other learners.
  • Engage in the academic mission in consultation with the Department Chair, with opportunities for research, quality improvement, curriculum development, and education initiatives aligned with the faculty assignment.
  • Participate in clinical service at OSUWMC facilities and other assigned sites; contribute to divisional, departmental, and college committee work; and engage with local, regional, or national professional organizations as appropriate.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a United States-accredited School of Optometry and NBEO examination completed; residency training in low vision rehabilitation required.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice optometry in the State of Ohio (or ability to obtain). Strong communication skills with peers, patients, and other health care professionals.
  • Excellent clinical skills and a demonstrated commitment to scholarship with evidence of basic and/or clinical research and publications; commitment to resident, fellow, and education activities.

Faculty Roles

  • Clinical faculty (any rank) — focus on delivering exemplary clinical care, with potential teaching and research; appointments are typically for three to five years and may be renewed.
  • Tenure-track faculty (any rank) — focus on research, teaching, and service; may include clinical care as appropriate.
  • Research faculty — focus on research; appointments for one to five years; not tenure-eligible.
