Responsibilities
- Processes library materials for customers, including check-in and check-out procedures.
- Registers new customers (borrowers) in accordance with established specialized protocols.
- Explains and enforces library policies and procedures.
- Provides information and answers questions from the public regarding library rules, including fines, fees, and material location, etc.
- Operates office equipment, including computers, and performs other incidental duties in a small office setting.
- Assists in shelving and moving materials.
- Prepares and processes outgoing and incoming delivery shipments as vital, including packing and unpacking.
- Provides support for various tasks and special projects, as needed.
Requirements
Note: To quantify qualifications, include:
Three (3) months' experience in a public customer-facing role, such as sales, food service, reception, or a similar position involving direct interaction in person, by phone, or online.
Age: At least 18 years of age.
Physical Class III - Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
Desirable Qualifications
- Successful completion of one or more accredited college or university course(s) in Library Technology or Library Science.
- Experience supporting the daily operations of a public library by performing tasks such as sorting and arranging books and other materials; serving library customers; maintaining supplies; inspecting books and materials for cleanliness and/or repairs; setting up library premises for special events, programs, and meetings; assisting with facility opening and closing procedures; maintaining the overall orderliness of library facilities.
Special Information
No Out-Of-Class or Withholds are allowed for this examination. Required experience must be met at the time of application filing.
- To receive credit for your education, you must provide a legible copy of your official transcript from an accredited institution within seven (7) calendar days after application submission. The document should demonstrate the number of library courses completed, bear the college seal, and be in English. If in a foreign language, it must be translated and evaluated for equivalency to U.S. standards.
- Official transcripts must be attached to your application or emailed to LibraryExams@library.lacounty.gov within seven (7) calendar days after application submission. Password-protected documents are not accepted.
- A public library is a publicly funded and officially recognized institution that provides free and equitable access to informational, educational, cultural, and recreational resources and services for the public within a designated geographical area.
Veteran’s Credit: If you are a veteran, you may be eligible for Veteran’s Credit, which can add an additional 10 points to a passing score. To apply, please submit a legible copy of your DD214 to the exam team.
Additional Information
Our assessment process consists of a Training & Experience (T&E) evaluation, weighted 100%, which reviews education and experience. You will answer related questions in the supplemental questionnaire. The passing score is 70%. Candidates who pass are placed on a list for 12 months.
Available Shift: Flexible schedule with a minimum of 20 hours per week, typically in 4-hour shifts, possibly including evenings, nights, and weekends.
