Overview

The North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts seeks a certified Court Reporter to support its mission to protect and preserve the rights and liberties of all the people by providing a fair, independent and accessible forum for the just, timely and economical resolution of their legal affairs.

Responsibilities

  • Record proceedings in court trials, hearings, and conferences using stenotype or voice writing reporting methods.
  • Accurately transcribe the record of court proceedings and deliver certified transcripts in a timely fashion pursuant to applicable rules.
  • Read aloud statements made by participants during court proceedings as circumstances require.
  • Ensure that evidence has been properly introduced and marked as an exhibit.
  • Take dictation of orders and findings of fact and type them for a judge's signature.
  • Maintain files, notes, tapes, and records to facilitate later reference and use.
  • Respond to inquiries from court personnel, attorneys, citizens, and prisoners.
  • Complete activity reports and travel reimbursement forms, and submit them to the Administrative Office of the Courts in a timely fashion.
  • The Roving Court Reporter position may require assignments across judicial districts to provide court coverage. This position is primarily assigned to Pitt County and surrounding areas. Standard travel reimbursement is provided and reporters are paid for transcripts in addition to base salary.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Competencies

  • Knowledge: English grammar, punctuation, and spelling; court rules, regulations, procedures, and operations; legal and specialized terminology; transcript format and style.
  • Skill: transcribing notes rapidly and accurately; using court reporting hardware.
  • Ability: take rapid and accurate dictation for extended periods at speeds sufficient for certification; accurately transcribe notes; type a large volume of material within deadlines; maintain confidentiality; represent the court with decorum.

Minimum Education And Experience

  • Certification from the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) as a Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) or the National Verbatim Reporters Association (NVRA) as a Certified Verbatim Reporter (CVR); or completion of a court reporting program approved by NCRA/NVRA and ten years of court reporting experience; or licensed as an official court reporter in another state with five years of experience.
