Position Description: Visual Arts Instructor

This position is responsible for providing instruction in the cultural arts to students ages five (5) to seventeen (17), for the PRODIGY cultural arts program. PRODGY is a Department of Juvenile Justice grant-funded prevention program. This position requires the ability to instruct children in cultural arts and to work with parents, program partners, and community members in a culturally diverse setting.

Responsibilities

I. Essential Functions of the Job

80% Classroom Instruction

  • Provide cultural arts instruction to PRODIGY youth ages five (5) to seventeen (17), in a culturally relevant, child-centered format.
  • Coordinate with Site Manager to design, plan and develop course curricula (through lesson plans) that identify and address prevention issues.
  • Formulate lesson plans such that student(s) are challenged to discover their personal agency through creative expressions, and to develop identifiable life skills.
  • Coordinate with PRODIGY Site Manager to obtain necessary course materials and supplies.

Classroom Management (percentage as needed during class time)

  • Conduct classroom activities according to PRODIGY program procedures, regulations and classroom rules.
  • Maintain classroom order conducive to learning.
  • Report, in a timely manner, classroom incidents and students’ progress to PRODIGY administrators.
  • Monitor daily attendance, and verify students’ attendance records.
  • Assign tasks to classroom assistants and volunteers.

15% Facilities and Property Maintenance

  • Maintains clean, organized workspace.
  • Maintains organization of classroom supplies and equipment.
  • Tracks consumable materials to facilitate loss prevention.
  • Informs PRODIGY Site Manager when materials need to be ordered or replaced.
  • Reports any damaged or broken equipment to PRODIGY Site Manager.
  • Adheres to PRODIGY program safety and security procedures and regulations.

5% Performs other teaching related duties as needed, including but not limited to participation in PRODIGY sponsored extracurricular events.

Education/Training/Experience:

Specialized Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent General Education Degree.
  • Two years’ experience (or equivalent in education, and experience) in at least one artistic specialty (plastic arts, music, theater).
  • One year art instruction experience (or equivalent in education and professional experience).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Six years professional experience (or equivalent in education, and experience) in at least one artistic specialty (plastic arts, music, theater).
  • Two years art instruction experience (or equivalent in education and professional experience).

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of art instruction to school-age children.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply cultural sensitivity in a classroom setting.
  • Skills in classroom communications and ability to communicate and relate to youth.
  • Knowledge of designated art specialty(s), with the ability to convey to youth the history, concepts and techniques of the designated art specialty(s).
  • Skills in communication (written and verbal) with fellow employees, students, parents, program partners, researchers, and program administrators.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
  • Ability to work with student(s) grades 1st through 12th.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments and to meet established deadlines.
  • Ability to understand and apply program procedures, regulations and rules.
  • Ability to interact with co-workers and students effectively in all types of situations.
