911 Call Taker / Dispatcher (Emergency Communications Specialist, Trainee) Are you ready to make a difference in your community? We’re seeking dedicated individuals to join our Division of Emergency Communications within the Department of Public Safety. As an Emergency Communications Specialist, you’ll play a vital role in emergency response coordination.

Responsibilities

Emergency Assistance Coordination: receive and process emergency assistance requests promptly; facilitate seamless communication of critical information to emergency response agencies.

Cutting‑Edge Equipment Operation: operate cutting‑edge communications equipment and technology, executing authorized techniques and procedures flawlessly.

Collaborate with a Dynamic Team: work closely with fellow dispatchers and call takers; contribute to a supportive team dedicated to saving lives daily.

Duties and Responsibilities: demonstrate crisis management, active listening, empathy, and patience; maintain caller and operational confidentiality.

Receive and process 9‑1‑1, emergency, and non‑emergency calls; evaluate and create events in the CAD system; provide pre‑arrival and post‑dispatch instructions; relays information to other jurisdictions; processes and prioritizes incoming calls.

Dispatch Fire, Police, and EMS personnel and equipment; monitor system status of public safety personnel and equipment; analyze situations accurately; provide operational support for fire, police, and medical operations; facilitate outside agency assistance and mutual aid requests.

Provide quality customer service to co‑workers, customers, citizens, and the public safety community.

Achieve and maintain all required certifications and training, including emergency medical dispatch, emergency fire dispatch, and emergency police dispatch certifications through the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch, CPR certification, Florida DOH 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator certification, and any other required certifications.

Maintain operational support, monitor system status, and ensure responder safety.

Education & Experience

Graduation from high school or equivalent (GED).

At least six months of experience in telecommunications, call center environment, or related high‑volume/high‑stress customer service field.

Licensing & Certifications

Pass all required licenses and certifications as per departmental policy; certifications may vary depending on jurisdiction and agency.

Full proficiency in emergency communications equipment and technology.

Background Check

Successful completion of a CJIS background check and maintenance of clearance during the probationary period.

Shift Availability

Work 12‑hour shifts, including overnights, nights, days, weekends, and holidays.

Other Requirements

Typing speed of at least 40 words per minute.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Familiarity with maps, geography of Lee County, and basic EMS, police, and fire procedures.

Keyboard proficiency and ability to use computer dispatch systems.

Adaptability to a fast‑paced, ever‑changing environment.
