Job Summary The Production Designer, having project design and installation experience, is responsible for leading a multi–disciplined design team in the development, documentation, coordination, and technical execution of the creative intent for all ride and show related elements and areas. They will develop virtual and physical models, drawings, and drawing packages that depict design and art direction for all show and scenic components of a project, ensuring integration of vendor efforts and internal resources. The role demands creative and technical solutions to meet critical design criteria such as guest experience, theoretical hourly capacity, show timing, vehicle spacing, and local building codes. In alignment with the Show Producer, Art Director, and Creative Director, the Designer ensures the project’s creative vision is accurately documented in models and drawing packages and executed on the field. They coordinate with Project personnel, departments, and disciplines (Design, Ride Show Engineering, Facility Architecture & Engineering, Project Management) and produce show set drawings, packages, 3‑D models, animations, and animatics detailing all ride & show elements of an attraction. The Designer uses modeling, drafting, and animation tools (AutoCAD, Revit, 3ds Max, Maya, Adobe Graphics, etc.) to create dimensional, scale drawings and models that integrate show elements with each other and the facility, and delivers constructable projects that meet program, creative intent, schedule, and budget requirements. Major Responsibilities Develop and execute the Creative Director’s vision through coordinated design drawings and deliverables, ensuring projects meet or exceed creative design intent and achieve desired guest experience on budget and schedule. Oversee design efforts of external resources and vendors, ensuring their documentation in models and drawings captures the design intent and stakeholder needs while meeting Universal standards. Provide day‑to‑day design team assignments, organize design reviews, and support cost, schedule, and technical discussions throughout all project phases. Participate in design, cost, schedule, and technical reviews; create creative design, color boards, sketches, drafting, and models that integrate themed environment elements – evaluating sightlines, visual intrusion, and concealment of non‑theatrical equipment. During construction, oversee contractors, develop in‑field solutions, and document follow‑up to ensure design intent and finish specifications are achieved. Mentor and provide guidance and training to staff, motivating them to accomplish assignment goals, building bench strength, and maintaining staff expectations and policies. Establish and maintain positive team relationships with open communication, trust, and teamwork across all project partners and disciplines. Communicate and maintain project intent among all team members, acting as liaison for internal and external partners, licensors, and intellectual property developers. Actively participate in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following UO policies, procedures, training, and team member involvement activities. Carry out other duties as assigned. Additional Information Must have completed a full project design and construction cycle with experience in every phase from concept design through construction, fabrication, and installation. Must be a creative, innovative, organized thinker and problem solver with strong technical and artistic abilities and proficiency in design techniques/tools such as show set/scenic design, drafting, 3‑D modeling, architectural design, and related software. Strong communication and collaboration skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment. Proficient in AutoCAD with strong skills in 3‑D modeling software such as Revit, 3ds Max, etc. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Education Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred (Architecture, Interior Design, Fine Arts, Design, Theater, Graphics, Computer Animation, etc.). Experience 8+ years theatrical design and production experience with field installation experience; 3+ years’ schematic phase through installation or equivalent combination of education and experience.
