Overview
The Department of Asian Languages & Cultures at Rutgers University invites applications for a tenure‑track position at the level of Assistant Professor in Japanese Literature and Culture, beginning September 1, 2026. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Japanese with a specialty in literature, cultural studies, film studies, and/or visual cultures. The Ph.D. must be completed by the beginning of the appointment (September 1, 2026). All job offers are contingent upon successful pre‑employment background screening prior to commencement of employment.
Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate courses at all year levels and MA‑level seminars.
 - Contribute actively to the development of undergraduate and graduate programs in Japanese and Asian Studies.
 - Maintain an active and productive research agenda in Japanese Studies.
 
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Japanese (or have completed the Ph.D. by the beginning of the appointment).
 - Expertise in one or more of the following areas of Japanese Studies: literature, cultural studies, film studies, and/or visual cultures.
 - Fluency in English and Japanese.
 - Demonstrated excellence in research and teaching.
 - Three letters of reference.

Compensation and Benefits
The academic year salary for an assistant professor will not be less than $82,110, based on the most recent collective bargaining agreement between the faculty union (AAUP‑AFT) and Rutgers University.
