The Benicia Public Library is a stand-alone municipal library open 7 days a week, serving a community of approximately 30,000 residents and students. The Library Assistant performs a wide variety of para-professional library clerical tasks such as processing and circulating library materials, assisting library customers, and responding to routine information requests. They provide front line library support services and perform related work as required. Currently the department hopes to secure candidates who are available to be on-call to fill in for Library Assistant's when they have pre-scheduled appointments, vacations, etc. Distinguishing Characteristics
Positions in this part-time class are characterized by the performance of routine library clerical duties. Employees in this class work under supervision.
Work is observed and reviewed both during its performance and upon completion, and changes in procedure or exceptions to rules are explained in detail as they arise. Details of the library computer circulation database are explained and learned in this position. Representative Duties / Qualifications
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Explain library's circulation policies and procedures. Issue library cards and update customer information. Assist customers in checking out and returning library material. Assist customers with the Self Check machines. Assist customers with overdue materials, disputed transactions, and collect fines and fees pursuant to library policies. Record receipt of monies paid for lost or damaged materials. Simple mending of library materials may be required. Assist in processing new library materials of all formats for public use Check out interlibrary loan library materials to customers Perform bibliographic searching on library databases Considerable public contact is involved in the explanation of library services and functions. QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates possession of the following knowledge and abilities:
Knowledge of:
Correct English usage, vocabulary, spelling and grammar. Alphabetical and numerical sequences including decimal notation. Office methods, equipment and policies Principles and processes for providing customer services are required. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. Ability to:
Understand and follow written and oral instructions. Perform detailed tasks with accuracy. Learn, use and apply library policies and procedures, vocabulary and materials. Communicate effectively with customers, supervisors and coworkers. Work a flexible a schedule including evenings and weekends. Develop and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with others. Lifting, bending and stooping may be required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
