Base pay range: $18.92/hr - $22.86/hr (GS.06)
Work Schedule
Monday – Saturday, 8:00 A.M. – 6:00 P.M. (EST). Hours may vary due to work assignments or projects.

Position Overview
The Library Service Specialist represents the Chattanooga Public Library and provides excellent internal or external customer service. The role requires limited supervision and focuses on assisting patrons, executing library operations, and promoting the library’s mission as a catalyst for lifelong learning.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver consistently excellent customer service and support the library mission.
- Apply specialized knowledge of library industry practices, services, and technology to serve patrons.
- Self‑educate in professional development and use common sense and critical thinking to achieve goals.
- Propose improvements to library operations and services.
- Act as a shift leader when required, coaching and motivating other library staff.
- Cross‑train in all library departments and enforce policies while balancing patron needs.
- Develop, promote, implement, and evaluate specialty programs and services.
- Process forms for passport applications, operate as a Notary Public, and manage necessary device operations.
- Conduct inventory management, circulation desk activities, inter‑library loans, and reference services.
- Train patrons in the use of electronic reference sources and troubleshoot technical issues.
- Maintain accurate bibliographic records, databases, and provide statistical reports.
- Participate in meetings, committees, and community outreach, including the Makerspace and Local History Department.
- Assist with special events, program presentations, and service vehicles as needed.
- Perform regular cleaning and maintenance of library facilities.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED and at least four (4) years of relevant education, training, or experience.
- Preferred: 1–2 years of public service, children’s library work, ordering and cataloging materials, instruction, or makerspace programming.
- Must be qualified to become a passport agent within six (6) months, depending on the assigned area.
Additional Requirements
- Valid driver’s license (depending on assigned area).
- Ability to work outside normal hours for outreach requests.
- Background check, drug screening, and lift test.
- Safe handling of child‑sensitive materials and compliance with safety policies.
