Position Summary Entry level position that designs for transmission lines, electrical or gas distribution and transmission substation projects. The designer is specialized in one of three technical areas: physical, control, or civil design, but capable of working in all three. The designer works in support of capital improvements, modifications and system reconfigurations completed by construction, operations, or maintenance.
Essential Responsibilities
Efficiently and safely produce plan & profile drawings, route maps, sag charts, new designs for grading, grounding, foundations, structures, conduit plans, 3 lines, one-lines, AC and DC schematics, metering, relaying, controls, section views, or panel layouts.
Provide support and direction for well executed team efforts on projects including planning, scheduling, cost and budget control, and communication to the project team members and management.
Perform inspection work and maintain liaison with construction and/or contractor field construction personnel to ensure adequacy of design, and compliance with plans and specifications.
Effectively plan design activities, in accordance with the project team’s plans, to assure projects are completed as scheduled. Update the schedules to reflect an accurate status of the project’s progress.
Coordinate project development on small, routine projects, including equipment problems, and design modifications required by project changes.
Develop new design standards and modify existing design standards to provide safe, reliable, and cost-effective designs. Check and review designs, design guides and standards by others (including consultants).
Transmission Designer I Pay range: $24.45 to $34.21 per hour.
Minimum Requirements
Associate's degree in drafting, design, automation, electronics, mechatronics, engineering, GIS, or related field. In lieu of a degree, a combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge.
Working knowledge of GIS, design software, work management programs, and related systems.
Knowledge of construction standards, materials, and technical codes.
Proficiency with Windows OS and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, Access, etc.).
Self‑starter, able to work with minimal supervision.
Driver’s license may be required.
Transmission Designer II Pay range: $28.70 to $40.16 per hour.
Minimum Requirements
Associate's degree in drafting, design, automation, electronics, mechatronics, engineering, GIS, or related field. In lieu of a degree, a combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge.
Minimum 2 years of experience as a Designer I or equivalent.
Proficient in GIS, design software, work management programs, and related systems.
Strong knowledge of construction standards, materials, and technical codes.
Proficiency with Windows OS and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, Access, etc.).
Self‑starter, able to work with minimal supervision.
Driver’s license may be required.
Senior Transmission Designer Pay range: $33.05 to $46.29 per hour.
Minimum Requirements
Associate's degree in drafting, design, automation, electronics, mechatronics, engineering, GIS, or related field and 5 years direct designer-level experience. In lieu of a degree, a combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge.
Minimum of 5 years of design experience or equivalent, preferably 3 years as an Xcel Energy Designer II.
Mastery of GIS, design software, work management programs.
Demonstrated knowledge of transmission line design, substation design, or distribution design.
Demonstrated knowledge of construction standards, materials, and technical codes.
Mastery of Windows OS and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, Access, etc.).
Highly effective communication and innovative problem‑solving skills. Self‑starter, able to work with minimal supervision.
Driver’s license may be required.
Preferred Characteristics
Previous experience working with MicroStation.
