Clark Nexsen is seeking an Automation Controls Technical Designer who will perform numerous Controls Engineering-related tasks, including but not limited to assessing, developing, installing, implementing, commissioning, monitoring, and maintaining custom control systems in heavy industrial or manufacturing facilities. Responsibilities
Perform various aspects of automation controls design including understanding, use, and development of automation/control logic, PLC programs, and graphics for HMI, electrical schematics, P&ID’s, and wiring diagrams. Design and program industrial control systems (ICS) including PLCs, remote I/O, RTUs, and HMI components. Collaborate with project teams (electrical engineers, control system programmers, information system programmers, manufacturers, suppliers, and clients) to design, develop, manufacture, install, and deliver integrated automation controls solutions. Assist with management of the mechanical portion of projects and work with assigned project managers to meet client budgets, goals, objectives, and deadlines. Provide check-out, operational testing, commissioning, start-up, and calibration of controls systems at customer sites, coordinating with the firm’s commissioning services as applicable. Provide assessments, troubleshooting, maintenance, redesign, and end-user training to help clients achieve equipment utilization and operational goals. Recommend equipment parameters, technical specifications, calibration requirements, and spare parts. Prepare, review, and update Standard Operating Procedures for automated equipment and systems. Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and Clark Nexsen’s quality control policies and procedures. Perform construction phase services on-site, respond to RFIs, review shop drawings, and prepare as-builts as directed. Work with, respond to, and take direction from project managers, PICs, Operations Directors, and Senior Management; may act as lead or first-level supervisor when necessary. Travel as required. Required Skills
Perform design services including Conceptual Studies, process flow diagrams, P&IDs, instrument selection, and control panel design with minimal supervision. Coordinate and commission all aspects of industrial controls design and installation as requested by the Design Manager or Project Engineer. Develop project schematic designs, design development designs, and construction documents. Comply with quality control policies and procedures. Provide support during bidding processes. Work with senior engineers and project managers; possess excellent communication and technical precision with creative design skills. Maintain a client-oriented attitude and dedication to professional development and excellent service. Provide leadership, coaching, and mentoring; handle complex issues with minimal supervision. Be able to travel and work with minimal supervision as required. Required Experience
A high school diploma or GED is required, with 7–18 years of specific experience in design and installation of Automation/Controls systems, including start-up and commissioning, and knowledge of applicable codes/standards. An Associate’s, Bachelor’s, or Advanced Degree in automation controls or a related field, or a related certificate, is preferable. Experience in Design-Build projects and DOD/Military facilities is a plus. Membership in ISA (International Society of Automation) is encouraged. Desirable certifications: CAP, CCST, CIMM, NICET (Industrial Instrumentation). Ability to effectively utilize current company software for word processing, email, accounting, and information management; familiarity with design and production software and building knowledge of software capabilities and limitations. Proficiency with software such as MS Office, Outlook, Visual Basic, Rockwell RSLogix (5/500/5000), Siemens Step 7, various HMI/PLC software, CIP-based protocols, Modbus, AutoCAD, Autodesk Plant Design Suite, AutoCAD P&ID, AutoCAD Electrical, Autodesk Revit, and other BIM/3D modeling tools.
