JOB SUMMARY The Communications Director provides strategic leadership for all church communications, setting the vision and direction for the department. This role develops systems and strategies to clearly and creatively communicate the message of Jesus, support ministry goals, and reflect the church’s mission, values, and culture.
Key responsibilities include overseeing messaging, brand consistency, graphic design, digital and print content, social media, videography, crisis communications, and support for Sunday and seasonal services or events. The director is a gifted multitasker in fast-paced settings and collaborates closely with senior leadership and ministry teams to deliver unified communication strategies that engage the congregation and wider community.
This role supervises staff, volunteers, contractors, and vendors; manages departmental goals, growth, and budget; and brings strategic vision, creativity, project management, spiritual insight, and technical expertise to all communications efforts. The ideal candidate is experienced yet teachable, passionate about the global and local church, rooted in the Vineyard movement, and committed to using communication to make disciples and invite others into a deeper relationship with Jesus at CVVC and in Mesa County. As staff members, we collectively act as proponents for encouraging individuals to embrace a lifestyle as cherished apprentices of Jesus. This is achieved by nurturing the five elements specified in our focus statement: engaging with Jesus, understanding the teachings of Jesus, practicing the works of Jesus, collaborating with Jesus, and extending invitations to others.
PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Leadership & Oversight: Direct communication strategies; align messaging with church mission, vision, and department goals; develop clear plans and processes.
Top-Level Project & Program Management: Collaborate with Comms Project Manager, staff, and leaders to manage timelines and deliverables.
Content & Messaging: Oversee platform-wide messaging; manage content creation for web, email, print, and social; ensure clarity, consistency, and theological alignment; support ministry needs.
Crisis Communication: Lead urgent/sensitive messaging; deliver timely communications with leadership; guide crisis response.
Supervision & Management: Provide spiritual, managerial, and developmental support for staff and volunteers; supervise staff and contractors; lead volunteer training and culture building.
Events & Services: Lead or support planning for services, holidays, campaigns, and events.
Digital & Print Media: Manage social media and website; direct production of graphics, slides, signage, vinyl, emails, etc.; ensure brand and language consistency.
Photography, Videography & Podcast: Coordinate or capture media for events and services; oversee podcast/video production; maintain media library.
Financial, Administrative, Data, & Tech Support: Track budgets, purchases, and data; maintain organized systems; provide light IT support; coordinate with vendors and admin staff.
Collaboration: Partner with Senior/Executive Pastors to align communications with mission; work with ministry leaders and volunteers; develop shared language; engage community partners and media.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Staff/Church Community Involvement: Participates in the life of the CVVC staff and church community as needed, including meeting and training attendance.
Special Projects Support: Assists with Special Projects (holidays, outreach events, etc.) as needed.
Other Communications Roles: Assist the Senior Pastor, Executive Pastor, and others as situational communications project needs arise.
QUALIFICATIONS/WORK EXPERIENCE A bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, project management, or a related field is preferred. Candidates should have at least three years of experience leading communications, marketing, or project management teams and initiatives. Experience with various design, web, and project management tools is helpful, along with a background in non-profit program administration and crisis communication. Additionally, three or more years of experience serving on church staff or as a dedicated volunteer is considered beneficial. Strong professional written and verbal communication skills are essential. A solid understanding of internal and external communication best practices, combined with the ability to multitask, lead, and supervise with clarity, compassion, and strong interpersonal skills, is vital for success in this role.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS Under the direction of the Executive Pastor, the Communications Project Manager should both contribute, in some capacity, these essential skills:
Strategic and big-picture thinking with clear process development
Strong leadership, supervision, and team management
Effective project management, delegation, and execution
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
Consistent brand, messaging, and language strategy
Digital content, web, and social media management
Marketing, branding, and creative direction
Graphic design and media literacy (basic to intermediate)
Crisis communication awareness and responsiveness
Budgeting, resource oversight, and program management
Tech-savvy with strong administrative and organizational skills
Event planning, collaboration, and relationship building
Adaptable, detail-oriented, and able to multitask
Heart for ministry, community, and the global Church
WORK SCHEDULE This is a 32-40-hour-a-week position and is primarily in-office. Primary workdays will be Sunday through Thursday, with some after-hours or on-call work as needed, with an emphasis on maintaining healthy staff rhythms and workloads.
