The Opportunity The Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Senior Substation Designer functions in a senior lead engineering technician capacity. Under general direction, you will modify or create deliverables and perform assignments of a design nature by applying basic engineering principles and established design practices to develop complex design concepts. You will provide technical guidance and may direct other engineering professionals. The ideal candidate will have advanced experience with AutoDesk Inventor (SDS) and advanced experience with physical substation design (AIS and/or GIS).

Key Responsibilities Engineering Standards
Provide guidance and direction using knowledge of standards, systems, document control, departmental guides, applicable codes, and BV policies.
Review project requirements and determine correct format and contents of required deliverables.
Quality / Continuous Improvement
Promote quality within project/group/section.
Review design inputs to ensure consistency.
Assist in ensuring deliverables comply with specific codes and standards.
Control drawing history and records using appropriate methods as established by the project.
Demonstrate personal accuracy and drive continual improvement and change management efforts.
Engineering Production
Apply basic engineering principles and design practices in developing moderately complex design concepts and deliverables.
Use judgment to decide on deliverables and input interpretation.
Handle difficult technical assignments within the area of expertise and provide guidance to others.
Perform design calculations, material quantities, estimates, and records.
Utilize advanced applications (e.g., modeling and design software).
May review deliverables of others.
Define work assignments and maintain schedules.
May program control systems or support plant start‑up activities.
Project Coordination
Coordinate with other design group personnel to review and exchange project information necessary for design development.
May support field activities.
May communicate project design requirements, progress, and schedules.
Client Focus
Assist in identifying key client interests and drivers; may determine key clients in some instances.
Communicate client interests and drivers to the project team and develop approaches to accommodate these concerns.
Knowledge Sharing, Innovation and Technology
Assist discipline or department management in developing and communicating design standards and process improvement activities.
Identify training and development needs for supervised personnel.
May be recognized for expertise in one or more areas.
People Management – Supervision, Career Development, Mentoring
Assist with performance management, recognition, and corrective actions.
Participate in career planning and learning & development.
Supervise engineering technicians, including mentoring, instruction, delegation, and feedback.
Resource Management – Staffing
Assist in monitoring staffing levels and available skill sets for projects.
Assist in identifying resource application needs and process requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Associate Degree in Drafting or an Engineering Design Related Technology (preferred).
Bachelor Degree in an Engineering Design Related Technology (preferred).
Minimum of 8–11 years related work experience.
Advanced experience with AutoDesk Inventor (SDS).
Advanced experience with physical substation design (AIS and/or GIS).
Intermediate knowledge of schematics, wiring, and panel fronts.
Advanced knowledge of engineering standards, systems, document control, departmental guides, and BV policies.
Intermediate industry knowledge and technology trends.
Advanced knowledge of other disciplines.
Basic knowledge of construction & constructability practices.
Intermediate knowledge of engineering design principles and applicable design guides.
Basic knowledge of procurement & contract administration.
