Shape how our categories come to life through interior design, material sourcing, and category selection. Translate design vision into cohesive palettes, specifications, and visuals that improve quality, reduce costs, and delight customers. Your work will directly influence category decisions and sourcing strategies to strengthen our collections across markets. About Ashley Furniture

Ashley Furniture Industries is the largest manufacturer of furniture in the world. We're driven by our North Star: to inspire the love of home and enrich the lives of those around us. Our mission is to improve quality, reduce costs, do more business, be profitable, and stay in business. We value honesty & integrity, passion, drive & discipline, dirty fingernails (hands‑on work), continuous improvement, and growth focus. Our growth pillars are a culture of leadership, a customer‑centric approach, and boundaryless collaboration. The Role

Reporting to the VP of Global Design and Merchandising, you will develop interior design concepts and detailed specifications that guide category decisions and material choices. Source and evaluate materials, build cohesive palettes across product lines, and produce drawings and 3D visuals that enable fast, confident decisions. Day‑to‑day you will create finish and fabric schedules, sample boards, and clear specification packages that internal stakeholders can execute. Assess supplier capabilities, compare material performance and cost, and partner across design, sourcing, and merchandising to align on aesthetics, quality, and budgets. Your work will help us improve consistency across categories, shorten development cycles, and elevate the customer experience. Responsibilities

Design cohesive interior concepts and translate them into detailed drawings, 3D models, and specifications for product categories, enabling faster decisions and consistent aesthetics across assortments. Source and evaluate materials (woods, veneers, metals, finishes, textiles, leathers) for performance, cost, availability, and sustainability; document specifications to improve quality and reduce material costs. Create material palettes, finish schedules, and sample boards for each category, ensuring manufacturability and clear handoffs to internal stakeholders. Build and maintain a centralized material library with verified samples, test data, and pricing, increasing reuse of approved materials and shortening development cycles. Support category selection and management by delivering design‑driven assessments during line reviews; rationalize finishes, fabrics, and options to optimize assortments and reduce duplication. Partner with merchandising to align design concepts and material choices with assortment strategies and customer preferences, improving product appeal and sell‑through. Produce clear, complete specification packages (cut sheets, bills of materials, finish and fabric specs), reducing rework and downstream quality issues. Analyze trend, competitor, and customer insights to inform material sourcing and category design direction, balancing innovation with cost discipline. Document standards, templates, and best practices for interior specifications and material selection, driving continuous improvement in quality and cycle time. Collaborate with colleagues across design, sourcing, and quality to resolve issues quickly, enabling on‑time decisions and adherence to budgets. Technical Requirements

Proficiency in AutoCAD to produce accurate plans, elevations, and detailed drawings that inform manufacturing and sourcing decisions for furniture categories. Experience with SketchUp or Revit to build 3D models and visualizations used to communicate category design concepts and material selections in internal reviews. Command of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) to create mood boards, material palettes, and presentation decks that clearly convey design direction. Ability to write and manage specifications, bills of materials, and finish/fabric schedules using standard documentation tools and spreadsheets to ensure complete, actionable handoffs. Knowledge of furniture materials and manufacturing processes (wood joinery, veneers, upholstery, foams, finishes) and how material properties impact quality, durability, and cost. Familiarity with material testing and performance criteria (abrasion, colorfastness, cleanability) to select fabrics and finishes that meet Ashley quality standards. Experience organizing supplier quotes, samples, lead times, and compliance documentation in vendor databases, enabling timely material sourcing decisions. Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, or a closely related field, or equivalent practical experience. 3+ years of professional interior design experience in residential, hospitality, or home furnishings environments, with hands‑on material sourcing and specification writing. Demonstrated ability to develop cohesive design concepts and translate them into precise drawings, 3D models, and specification packages used by cross‑functional teams. Proven skill in material sourcing for furniture and interiors, including evaluating performance, sustainability, cost, and supplier capabilities to make trade‑off decisions. Experience supporting category selection and assortment decisions by using design and customer insights to rationalize finishes, fabrics, and options across product lines. Excellent communication and collaboration skills to present design rationale clearly to colleagues and drive alignment across design, sourcing, and merchandising. High attention to detail and a hands‑on, problem‑solving mindset; able to inspect samples, verify specifications, and resolve issues quickly to maintain quality and timelines. Working knowledge of furniture construction, textiles, and finishes, with the ability to balance quality and cost in a fast‑paced environment. Ability to lead design share‑outs and facilitate cross‑functional design reviews, influencing decisions through clear visuals and data‑backed rationale. What We Offer
