Waukegan Community Unit School District No. 60 serves nearly 17,000 students in preschool through grade 12 and is located halfway between Chicago, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan. The District has 1 early learning center, 15 elementary schools, five middle schools and a high school program divided between two 9th - 12th grade campuses. The District encompasses portions of Waukegan, Beach Park and Park City.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Library Media Specialist will be directly responsible to the building Principal. He/she will ensure that students are effective users of information and ideas by providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats, and by providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using information and ideas. He/she will be indirectly responsible to the Director of Secondary Education for all matters pertaining to curriculum, instructional methods, assessment and materials.

Responsibilities: Learning and Teaching:
  1. Performs the duties of information specialist, teacher, and instructional consultant as a specialist in learning resources and strategies; information location, evaluation and use; and the design of instruction;
  2. Serves on committees involved with designing learning activities for students and/or curricular revision;
  3. Utilizes current research and methods in areas of technology, teaching, learning, library and information science;
  4. Collaborates with teachers to integrate research, information retrieval skills, and literature appreciation into the curriculum;
  5. Collaborates with teachers in developing activities which stress interdisciplinary strategies;
  6. Assists teachers and students in using information resources and incorporating information skills into classroom curriculum;
  7. Exercises leadership and serves as a catalyst in the instructional program, providing various services to students and staff;
  8. Uses a variety of material and activities to stimulate and maximize learning to help students achieve educational and personal goals;
  9. Maintains an attractive and inviting physical environment which allows for enriched learning experiences and intellectual growth.

Information Access:
  1. Selects materials and technology which support the school's educational philosophy and curriculum;
  2. Creates and maintains a collection development process which includes such aspects as maintaining accurate and current catalogs and records, weeding, and inventories;
  3. Provides access to materials and information for both students and staff by adhering to established policies, laws, (including copyright laws), principles of intellectual freedom, and ethical behavior;
  4. Selects and provides resources and technologies needed to integrate and produce authentic learning experiences.

Program Administration:
  1. Develops short and long-range goals which guide the development of the library media program;
  2. Promotes the library media programs services, and its materials by maintaining a positive relationship with students, staff, and the community;
  3. Develops and implements policies and procedures of flexible access for staff and students;
  4. Works with administration and staff to implement a technologically advanced facility and program;
  5. Evaluates library media programs, services, facilities, and materials to ensure optimum use;
  6. Submits all reports accurately and promptly;
  7. Prepares and oversees a library media program budget which reflects the needs of the entire school community;
  8. Selects, trains, and supervises clerical support, student assistants, and adult volunteers to perform duties efficiently;
  9. Maintains and enhances professional knowledge in trends and technology in information science by participating in various professional organizations and activities which relate to the library media programs and technology.

Additional Duties: Perform such other professional duties as may be assigned by the building principal and Director of Secondary Education.

Qualifications:
  1. Paraprofessional License or Paraprofessional Approval

Salary: Per contract
