BASE SALARY FOR:

  • Materials Laboratory Technician, Sub‑Journey 1: $20.32 hourly
  • Materials Laboratory Technician, Sub‑Journey 2: $22.82 hourly
  • Materials Laboratory Technician, Sub‑Journey 3: $24.04 hourly
  • Materials Laboratory Technician, Sub‑Journey 4: $27.84 hourly
  • Materials Laboratory Technician, Journey: $29.66 hourly

What you will be doing:

The Materials Laboratory Technician 1/2/3/4/Journey (MLT) will be part of a team in the DOT&PF Central Region Materials Section Lab that cooperatively performs materials testing in support of Highway and Aviation design and construction projects. The incumbent will be overseen by senior technicians as they perform designated tests in areas of soils/aggregates, concrete/cement, bituminous mix/asphalt materials, and/or special products.

Our department's mission is to "Keep Alaska Moving" and our division focuses on designing, building, and improving Alaska's transportation infrastructure. The Central Region Materials Section consists of a multi‑disciplinary team of engineers, assistants, and lab staff who support Highway and Aviation Design & Construction projects.

The working environment you can expect:

The Central Region Materials Lab is located at 5750 East Tudor Road in Anchorage, a satellite office of the regional branch at 4111 Aviation Avenue. Daily work involves performing various materials tests, completing lab forms, using computer testing software, and inspecting, maintaining, and calibrating testing equipment.

Special Note:

  • All MLTs must achieve and maintain Western Alliance for Quality Transportation Construction (WAQTC) and National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) credentials. Entry‑level MLTs must obtain these during the probationary period. NICET levels advance from level one (concrete, soils, asphalt) to level two at the Journey level; continuous education units are required for retention.
  • Requires proficiency in basic mathematics, reading comprehension, and computer skills.
  • Ability to handle continuous physical labor with loads up to 60 kg (130 lb).
  • Valid Driver's License is required.
