Job Summary & Responsibilities Our Mechanical Designers use creativity and problem solving to design state of the art projects, implement technological advancements, and stretch their talent. The Mechanical Designer works with Engineers from multiple disciplines to develop knowledge and gain new skills. While our Mechanical Designers are expected to have common knowledge of design concepts, practices, and procedures, there is a lot of opportunities to grow within POET!
This role is part of a strategic hiring initiative to add over 20 new team members to support our growing organization. This is an on‑site role located in Sioux Falls, SD.
Work with the design team to develop piping, equipment, and other mechanical system designs
Create and modify 3D CAD models
Collaborate with engineers and designers from multiple disciplines to ensure a seamless design that meets the project objectives
Review design drawings and equipment data sheets; evaluate design requirements and propose effective solutions or alternative design approaches
Create and revise assembly, erection, fabrication, detail, and related drawings
Conduct site visits to verify and document design criteria
Conduct model reviews with design team and stakeholders
Meet all safety, budget, and schedule requirements
Assist in new technology research and testing to improve processes
Assist with on‑site commissioning and start‑up activities
Foster a culture of safe behavior and environmental compliance at all times
Maintain a team environment at all times and champion POET in the community

Qualifications & Skills
Associate’s degree or greater with an emphasis in CAD Drafting preferred
Experience requirements:
Mechanical Designer I: No experience required
Mechanical Designer II: 4 or more years of overall experience with 3 or more years of experience in a related industry
Mechanical Designer III: 8 or more years of overall experience with 6 or more years of experience in a related industry
Senior Mechanical Designer: 12 or more years of overall experience with 10 or more years of experience in a related industry
You communicate effectively in writing and in person
You know the basics of Microsoft Office Suite. You’re capable of learning new programs

Work Environment
Up to 25% travel will be part of the norm for this position to visit the bioprocessing facilities, meetings, and site visits. At times, overnight travel may be required
In this role, you’ll be asked to drive a POET vehicle. A motor vehicle record check will be conducted during the pre‑employment process
The work environment at POET is dynamic. You should expect a balance between time spent in the office and at the bioprocessing facility, which may include some physical labor helping your team members
