Job Description GCI's Construction & Implementation Technician I
is a field‑based technician position working closely with engineering and project‑management offices to develop, construct, deliver, and deploy network infrastructure and architecture, including outside/inside plant applications. The role maintains system‑wide oversight and network integrity across all plant systems, architecture, network, and business facilities throughout Alaska and occasionally the lower 48. Work locations include customer residential property, business properties, field sites, and central offices.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Construction, design, and implementation of network facilities and delivery architecture to maintain network integrity in accordance with industry standards and best practices.
Implementation and installation, modification, testing, and turn‑up procedures of video, voice, and data circuits and equipment—including terrestrial, satellite, microwave, optical, hybrid fiber‑coax, and Ethernet—according to industry standards and best practices.
Support and install equipment racks, cabinets for central, remote, and field offices including rack support pedestals, cable trays, bracing, optical enclosures, and all relevant cabling infrastructure.
Accurately read, interpret, evaluate, apply, implement, and update information from system maps, equipment readings, test parameters, construction and design work orders, engineering drawings, and follow‑up documentation.
Coordinate and oversee contract resources, i.e., installers, technicians, electricians, HVAC contractors.
Collaborate and coordinate with Construction and Implementation technicians, engineering and operations staff, companywide leadership, and business and residential customers.
Daily reporting and communication using PC and mobile devices for email, text, and video chat; produce written and photo site documentation.
Effectively communicate information via virtual platforms (Teams), phone, and in‑person; respond to routine business correspondence and documentation.
Adhere to company and OSHA safety guidelines, including safe work practices and fall protection requirements.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum four (4) years of experience in telecommunications or related background, including at least one (1) year of complex network experience.
Upon hire may be required to complete and maintain company or other applicable training and certifications: Pole/Tower Climber, AK DOT Bucket Truck, AK DOT Approved Flagger.
For progression to Technician I, completion of NCTI “Installer” course or approved equivalent.
Preferred: Associate’s degree in electronics or related field; prior tower climber certification; telecommunications experience; and other relevant telecom certifications.
Additional Competencies
Working knowledge of GR.1275, NEC, NESC, OSHA, FCC, and industry standards rules and regulations.
Basic understanding of network architecture, system documentation, engineering plans, and network drawings.
Knowledge of electrical, telephony, and HFC equipment, test equipment, and troubleshooting of circuits and equipment.
Ability to install, test, modify, and repair a wide range of central office, remote, and field office support equipment, including cabling, power distribution, and grounding.
Understand AC and DC power systems and grounding.
Knowledge of fiber‑optics, coaxial and network cable, satellite, microwave, telecommunications installation procedures.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Statewide travel, possibly including aircraft, ATVs, and other vehicles in remote Alaska.
Work inside and outside in cold weather; subject to adverse weather and driving conditions.
Operate below overhead construction and in trenches up to 10 feet.
Work around high‑power electrical conductors and gas lines; in cramped, dusty, wet, or hot environments.
Lift and maneuver equipment up to 70 pounds occasionally.
Flexible schedule, including overtime, weekends, holidays, and on‑call periods.
Driving Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, a satisfactory driving record, and complete a defensive driving course.
Drug Testing & Fitness for Duty
Pre‑employment drug test and/or participation in ongoing random testing may be required.
Pre‑employment or return‑to‑work fitness for duty examination may be required.
