Position Overview
Cumberland County Public Library is an important resource for our community, offering access to diverse materials, innovative programs, and welcoming spaces for learning and connection. As a Librarian I in Adult Services, you will play a key role in delivering exceptional customer service at the Adult Services Desk, helping patrons access information, technology, and recreational resources. This position also supports the library's mission by contributing to engaging programs that meet the evolving needs of our community. When assigned, you may serve as Team Leader to ensure a safe and positive environment for both patrons and staff. Examples of Duties
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in library science is required.
Trainee applicants must have completed at least 75% of required course work towards an MLS and submit a letter from the Dean of the Library School that states the number of credit hours already obtained and that the candidate can complete all Master's degree requirements within 12 months.

Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver's license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire.

- Staffs a public service point, delivering immediate and attentive customer assistance
- Provides proactive reference support, answering complex questions related to information, research, and technology resources
- Performs intermediate troubleshooting on library equipment and assists customers with basic technology issues
- Trains the public in the use of library tools, including the online catalog, databases, and other digital resources
- Resolves routine to intermediate customer complaints and concerns, referring complex issues to supervisory staff as needed
- Enforces and interprets library policies to ensure a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment
- Offers in-depth readers' advisory services tailored to individual patron interests
- Staffs online chat reference services as assigned to support remote patron needs
- Designs, presents, markets, and evaluates programs for adults and all-age audiences, including book clubs and computer skills classes
- Participates in marketing and outreach efforts, including preparing event publicity, assisting with event setup and breakdown, and transporting materials for off-site programs

- Knowledge of readers' advisory principles, methods, and reliable information sources
- Knowledge of library card registration requirements and related procedures
- Skill in searching and navigating the online public access catalog (OPAC) and specialized library databases
- Skill in using computers, manipulating a keyboard accurately, and operating audiovisual equipment and other library technology
- Ability to provide basic reference services and deliver high-quality customer assistance
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with coworkers and the general public
- Ability to instruct customers in the use of electronic resources, digital content, photocopiers, fax machines, public computer reservation systems, and self-checkout stations
- Ability to troubleshoot common issues with computers, printers, copiers, and fax machines
- Ability to organize work, coordinate activities, meet deadlines, and use good judgment in daily service delivery
- Ability to interact with the public tactfully and courteously, including addressing criticism or questions with diplomacy
- Ability to develop and deliver programs for various age groups and present information to management or community groups
