Position Summary The LAist newsroom is seeking an On‑Call Associate Producer to grow our audience by creating engaging, useful, and inclusive social media content. The role collaborates with editors, reporters, producers and hosts to ensure editorial goals and a love of Los Angeles are represented across social media accounts. The ideal candidate thinks creatively about reaching audiences where they are and is passionate about engaging Angelenos in civic life. They understand best practices on existing and emerging social media platforms, including creating compelling social graphics and videos in optimal formats.
Location & Compensation Hybrid, Pasadena, CA
Hourly: $35.00 - $37.00 per hour, adjusted for experience and education.

Position Responsibilities Collaborate with fellow social media producers to execute a cohesive strategy across LAist accounts, increasing reach and engagement.
Deploy diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in publishing and distribution.
Identify shareable, newsworthy content from stories and segments, translating it into native social media formats, including video editing.
Populate LAist’s social media accounts with content that performs well organically when audiences are active.
Collaborate with Community Engagement, Marketing, Membership, and Events teams to drive traffic, promote newsletters, and increase awareness of linear programming.
Maintain newsroom awareness of news events or tips from social media via DMs, trends, or other channels.
Support major breaking news events to aid newsgathering and distribution, preventing misinformation.
Reuse evergreen archival content creatively.
Engage with audiences on social channels to strengthen their connection to journalism.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
Two or more years of production, editorial, or related experience.
Become and remain a member in good standing of SAG‑AFTRA by the 30th day of employment.
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Build and curate for a social media audience.
Edit social media video using tools like CapCut or Adobe Premiere.
Support an inclusive, diverse workplace.
Write clean, concise, error‑free copy.
Spot errors and typos quickly.
Understand social newsgathering, verification, and identifying newsworthiness amid chatter.
Use analytics tools (Google Analytics, Hootsuite, Chartbeat) to inform strategy.
Understand LAist’s voice, accurate social content, and journalism ethics.
Multitask effectively.
Use mainstream and emerging social platforms.
Learn basic content management systems quickly.
Use Canva ethically.
Enter conversations on social media authentically.
Know local and regional Southern California news. Preferred Skills/Experience Fluency in Spanish or another language common in Southern California.
Knowledge of L.A. history and current events.
Journalistic experience.
Experience navigating social media during breaking news.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions Perform essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
