Germanna Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. As a comprehensive community college, Germanna provides quality, accessible, and affordable educational opportunities for the residents of the City of Fredericksburg and the counties of Caroline, Culpeper, King George, Madison, Orange, Spotsylvania and Stafford. The Manager of Writing and ELL Support Services will assume responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Fredericksburg Writing Center and the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) Online Drop-in Writing Center and will provide writing assistance to students during individual and group sessions during day and evening hours. The incumbent will also deliver on-campus and online specialized group instruction including, but not limited to, citation style workshops, grammar workshops, vocabulary reviews, peer editing sessions, research methodology, and tutorials focused on specific writing topics. The Manager of Writing and ELL Support Services will collaborate with the Chairs of the English Department to ensure that the Writing Center is prepared to help students achieve the learning objectives established for writing courses at Germanna. The incumbent will also work with instructors in other academic departments where papers are typically assigned. The Manager of Writing Support Services will solicit writing assignments, syllabi, and grading rubrics from faculty, so the Writing Center staff will be able to provide students with high quality, writing assistance that is aligned with faculty expectations. The Manager of Writing and ELL Support Services will supervise the Writing Support Specialists to provide just-in-time intervention to students enrolled in ESL and gateway English courses. By creating a calendar of major writing assignment due dates, the Manager of ACE Writing Support Services, in collaboration with the Associate Dean of Academic Support, will be able to schedule multiple tutors in the Writing Center during high volume periods of time during academic semesters. The Manager of Writing and ELL Support Services’ work responsibilities include focused academic support to ESL students through the development of supplemental ESL workshops for language and vocabulary specific to STEM sources, conversations groups for ESL students, and the development of academic support materials for ESL students. The Manager of ACE Writing and ELL Support Services will assist with the training and professional development for tutors and Writing Support Specialists throughout the year. The incumbent will also assist with the selection and training of staff assigned to gateway English classes. The incumbent will be expected to maintain a current knowledge of trends in writing remediation and best practices utilized by educational Writing Centers. The incumbant will also be expected to maintain an awareness of curricular changes that might require the support of the Writing Center. He or she will collaborate with the Academic Center for Excellence staff to develop programs and services designed to support the mission of Germanna Community College and the academic success of all students. Minimum Qualifications:
Competency in all writing topics ranging from English composition, grammar, rhetoric, scientific writing, argumentative writing, research papers, creative writing, literary analysis, and poetry. Tutoring and/or teaching experience in higher education Supervisory experience preferred Ability to develop, organize, manage, and execute projects Microsoft Office Tools, including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Internet Explorer Familiarity with online information, teaching, and learning environment Strong oral and written communication skills required Excellent organizational and judgment skills required Additional Considerations:
Bachelor of Arts degree in English or related field Experience teaching or tutoring in higher education preferred.
