Streets Crew Member
Under the direct supervision of the Streets Foreman, the Streets Crew Member is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and improvement of City of Middleton public roads and related infrastructure. This position operates light and heavy equipment and performs a variety of tasks, including snow removal and ice control, streetlight repairs, street sweeping, stormwater system maintenance, and other general maintenance activities. The Streets Crew Member works collaboratively with other field maintenance staff and interacts with the public regularly. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Performs construction, maintenance, and repair of City streets, sidewalks, alleys, and related infrastructure such as patching streets, repairing asphalt and concrete, finishing concrete flatwork, and pavement markings. Operates light and heavy equipment, such as dump trucks, vacuum trucks, bucket trucks, tractors, end loaders, skid steers, forklifts, sweepers, pavers, roller, chainsaws, and various other equipment. Performs snow and ice control operations, such as plowing, salting, and brining roads during inclement weather, often during off-hours or emergency conditions. Conducts traffic signal maintenance and minor electrical repairs as assigned. Performs stormwater system maintenance, including cleaning catch basins, culverts, and drainage structures. Assists with street sweeping. Loads, unloads, and transports materials, tools, and equipment to and from job sites. Performs routine equipment inspections, maintenance, and cleaning; reports mechanical issues promptly. Follows all safety policies, procedures, and traffic control standards, including proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Responds to citizen inquiries and concerns as needed. Collaborates with other Streets, Parks, and Public Works staff to complete assigned projects efficiently. Maintains accurate records related to work performed, materials used, and equipment operations. Completes special projects and other job duties as assigned or required. The requirements listed below are necessary to perform the essential duties of the position: High School Diploma or equivalent A minimum of one (1) year of experience in street maintenance, public works field services, construction, or a closely related field. Possess or obtain within six (6) months of hire, a State of Wisconsin Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement The City of Middleton recognizes that candidates may bring a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Working knowledge of electrical infrastructure within traffic signals Working knowledge of stormwater systems, including catch basins, culverts, and drainage structures. General knowledge of patrol truck maintenance. General knowledge of GIS Skills Strong organizational and time management skills to handle to high volume of work, set priorities effectively, and adapt to shifting demands Excellent written and verbal communication skills, complemented by strong customer service and interpersonal skills. Collaboration skills to effectively work with others, fostering teamwork, clear communication, and creative problem solving Entry level proficiency in technology, including Microsoft Office, Timekeeping software, and other relevant software applications Abilities Ability to perform work duties under general supervision and operate within policy guidelines using independent judgment in achieving assigned objectives. Ability to demonstrate integrity, honesty, initiative, and respect while maintaining strict confidentiality in all aspects of work. Ability to comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures, and report all unsafe activities or conditions to a supervisor. Ability to maintain a valid, state-issued Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement driver's license. Thursday, 10-hours per day (40-hours per week) work schedule is required for this position. Availability for after-hours, weekends, and emergency work is required, particularly in response to public works emergencies and inclement weather conditions. Work is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, with possible exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and other environmental factors. Some indoor work is also necessary. Work will involve contact with the public, requiring effective communication and professional conduct. Work may involve exposure to stressful situations, deadlines, or conflict resolution. Work requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, reach, bend, stoop, and lift objects up to 50 pounds regularly. Work requires extended periods of standing or walking. Vision and hearing are required to perform essential functions and communicate effectively. Work will require climbing, operating equipment, or working in confined spaces.
