Position Summary
The Tool Crib Manager is responsible for the organization, control, availability, and cost management of all cutting tools, gauges, consumables, and related manufacturing support items. This role ensures CNC milling and turning operations are fully supported with the correct tooling, accurately preset, available on time, and maintained to production and quality standards—while minimizing downtime, waste, and tooling cost. The role works closely with CNC Programmers and Manufacturing Leadership to optimize tooling selection and utilization.
Key Responsibilities Tool & Inventory Management
Maintain accurate inventory of all cutting tools, inserts, holders, gauges, and consumables
Issue and receive tools to/from machinists and track usage
Monitor minimum/maximum levels and initiate replenishment
Organize and maintain a clean, labeled, and efficient tool crib
Tool Control & Cost Management
Track tool consumption by job, machine, or department
Identify abnormal tool wear, breakage, or usage trends
Support tooling cost reduction through standardization and optimization
Prevent loss, misuse, or hoarding of tools
Tool Prep & CNC Support
Preset, assemble, and stage tooling using tool presetters for CNC milling and turning operations
Build tooling per setup sheets and program requirements
Coordinate tool sharpening, repair, and replacement
Support machinists with tooling availability, troubleshooting, and improvements
Collaboration with CNC Programming
Work closely with CNC Programmers to identify and suggest appropriate standard and special tooling
Recommend in-house tooling alternatives to reduce cost, lead time, and inventory growth
Support new job launches by confirming tooling availability and identifying gaps early
Assist in tooling standardization efforts across programs and machines
Systems, Documentation & Continuous Improvement
Maintain tool data in ERP/MRP or tool management systems
Support accurate tooling lists for job setup documentation
Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives including Lean, 5S, setup reduction, and tooling standardization
Drive improvements related to flow, organization, and tooling cost reduction
Safety & Quality
Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of tooling and chemicals
Follow all safety, quality, and housekeeping standards
Support internal, customer, and ISO audits
Qualifications Required
3+ years of hands‑on experience supporting CNC milling and CNC turning operations
Strong working knowledge of cutting tools, inserts, holders, and CNC machining practices
Experience using tool presetters
Ability to read and interpret blueprints and machining documentation
Continuous improvement experience (Lean manufacturing, 5S, process improvement)
Experience managing tooling inventory in a manufacturing environment
Basic computer skills (ERP/MRP systems, Excel)
Preferred
Experience in a precision machining or job shop environment
Familiarity with tool management software
