Description Camp Mendocino

is a residential summer camp located in Northern California, four hours north of San Francisco and spread over 2,000 acres. We provide transportation between San Francisco and Camp at the start and end of the summer. All Camp employees are expected to live, sleep and work at Camp. As a program of the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco (BGCSF), we are dedicated to providing children and teens with safe, fun places to learn and grow, with professional staff to offer support and guidance, serving as caring mentors and role models.

Position Purpose The

Assistant Cook

assists in the planning and supervising of the food service for the entire Camp, providing meals that are nourishing, balanced and plentiful daily to over 300 staff and campers. Works closely with the Executive Chef, and is responsible in their absence.

Key Responsibilities

Supervise kitchen staff in food preparation and service in absence of Executive Chef

Oversee cooking and serving of food according to planned menus for 300+ people

Maintain accurate food service records

Supervise, train, and coordinate the duties of kitchen staff; ensure cleanliness standards are maintained by kitchen staff and camper volunteers

Oversee kitchen and storeroom

Works with the Executive Chef to ensure proper receipt and storage of food and other supplies

Works with program staff and kitchen staff to provide snacks for special events and cookouts

Work with Camp Mendocino’s COVID-19 team to follow all health and safety protocols

Perform other duties as needed

Requirements Required Skills

3+ years experience working in a camp or commercial food service setting

Current ServSafe Certification

Experience as a cook and/or assistant cook for large groups

Ability to prepare foods for special groups (including special dietary needs)

Knowledge of standards of food preparation and serving, and kitchen procedures

Supervisory experience

Desire and ability/interest to work in a camp setting

Preferred Skills

Specific Experience with Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten Free, Halal, or Kosher food

Experience working with youth

Strong communication skills

Ability to work well with others

Experience working in a summer camp environment

Experience with inventory, and stocking

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift 50lbs.

Must be able to walk on uneven terrain for at least 3 miles

Must be able to stand for 8 hours (with breaks)

Must be able to work in temperatures ranging from 30° to 100°

Schedule

Temporary/Seasonal Summer position.

Applicants should be available June 9- August 6, 2026 to work & live on-site at our Camp location in Northern California (Mendocino County).

Staff members work 40-56 hours/week depending on position with two days off per week. Days off vary per session.

Lodging Lodging is provided for all staff on site. The Assistant Cook will not be required to stay in a cabin with youth on a regular basis, but will be assigned bunk-style indoor housing that may be shared with up to 3 other staff members.

Pay The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and BGCSF needs. At BGCSF, our decisions are based on other factors and dependant on circumstances for each position. Depending on the need and requirement of the position, an individual could be hired at or near the entry level, mid - level or top of the range for their role and compensation. As such, a reasonable estimate for this temporary summer position from June 9- August 6, 2026, is $5,000.
