A well-established and growing insurance organization is seeking a

Sr. Commercial Underwriter

to lead underwriting strategy, evaluate complex risks, and manage the performance of a commercial lines portfolio. This role combines expert risk selection with cross‑functional collaboration, mentorship, and continuous improvement of underwriting processes.

You will serve as a key liaison between actuarial, claims, sales, and marketing teams while supporting the company’s growth, profitability, and underwriting discipline.

Key Responsibilities Underwriting & Risk Evaluation

Evaluate, select, and price complex commercial risks for new and renewal business within assigned authority levels.

Request and review additional underwriting information, including inspection reports, financial statements, and supporting documentation to determine acceptability.

Provide guidance on coverage appropriateness and viability.

Ensure all endorsement transactions are processed accurately and in accordance with underwriting rules and risk tolerances.

Maintain thorough knowledge of regulatory requirements, industry trends, and competitive market conditions.

Manage a commercial lines portfolio with a focus on profitability, loss ratio improvement, and sustainable growth.

Use data, trends, and analytics to identify emerging risks and recommend underwriting adjustments.

Collaborate with underwriting leadership to refine acceptability guidelines, classification standards, renewal criteria, and underwriting authority levels for staff.

Participate in periodic audits of underwriting files and team performance.

Mentor, coach, and support junior underwriters; assist with onboarding and training.

Provide expertise to sales, marketing, customer service, and claims teams to resolve questions and strengthen agency relationships.

Communicate effectively with agents, insureds, vendors, and internal stakeholders to gather information, explain underwriting decisions, and maintain strong partnerships.

Contribute to improving underwriting processes, procedures, and systems.

Occasional travel to meet with agency partners.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, risk management, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum 5–8+ years of commercial lines underwriting experience, with demonstrated authority and decision‑making capability.

Prior leadership, mentorship, or senior‑level responsibilities strongly preferred.

Designations such as CPCU, AU, AMIM, or ARM are highly desirable.

Strong analytical and mathematical skills; able to calculate rates, discounts, and underwriting factors.

Excellent communication, presentation, negotiation, and relationship‑building abilities.

Proficiency in underwriting tools and data software (e.g., Excel, Tableau).

Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems, make sound decisions with limited information, and manage shifting priorities.

High ethical standards, acute attention to detail, and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
